I must be missing something pretty silly... but can't find it. A7RIII. Going over my custom buttons again. The last one is Focus Hold and it is set to focus mode. I already have one of the C buttons for that. Another custom button would be nice, but... but I went through all the buttons and can't see one that isn't already set to something else. I don't see the Focus Hold button anywhere... What is it?

It's a button on some lenses , not the camera .

I'm not sure how many E mount camera lenses have one , but on the A mount lenses on A mount bodies it can be set for either focus hold or DOF preview .

I think it only shows up if you have a lens with such a button on it.

On A7Rxx bodies, the Focus Hold Button can be configured for any of the custom settings available.

I have that button configured for Focus Magnifier for use with my Macro lens.

On my A7R2 it shows in the menu whether or not a lens with that button is mounted. Or with no lens mounted.

That would be confusing to someone who assigned it a function but couldn’t find the button. Oh, is that what clarnibass meant?

As an aside, the A1 does a very nice job in the menus for assigning custom buttons - it shows sketches of the camera and exactly where each button is located, in four blocks: rear1 and rear2, top, and lens. That makes it completely clear which button is being assigned. I don’t know if the other gen 4 cameras do the same, but I’d hope so.

On the A7R4a, at least, the setting includes a picture of where the button it.

Some adapters also include the button. For instance, the Metabones IV T has one.

Quite right , I have the a7Riv and you can set it up for any option .

I leave mine set to focus hold , the same as my A mount gear .

I have the C3 button next to the menu button for focus magnification .

Finally got around to assigning that as a CF rather than having to mess about with the touch screen .

It's quicker for me to use the button on the lens for Focus Magnification.

I balance the lens in my left hand and my thumb rests on the button. C3 button is one inch to the left of my thumb which rests on the thumb grip.
Finally got around to assigning that as a CF rather than having to mess about with the touch screen .

That's the good thing about them being user selectable , you can set them up to work how they suit you best .

Yes that's what happened. I was only using lenses without the button when I checked it and it confused me.

Yes they do. Same thing happens on A7 IV.

I have mine set to APSC/35 mode, use it mainly on my 135, press the button and it becomes a 200mm, at 15Mb...

I was surprised that my Sony A7R2 does not have this feature. My seven year old Panasonic GX8 has a nice picture diagram showing all (12) custom locations.

The A7R2 was released one month after the GX8.

I own a Sony 70-300 A mount and an LA-EA3 can I use the lens button for anything on an a7riii body with the la-ea3?

Well, at least we can see that the Sony system has evolved, and the new menu system is definitely a step forward.

For new users, in particular, I think that's a big help. Getting set up at the outset (which is when menus come into play the most) is certainly easier than it used to be.

I have the a7Riv, but I imagine both have the same menu setup , in which case you can set the button to do any of the functions , regardless of if its an E mount lens or A mount lens .

Each company probably has their own weird features (or lack of). I was a little shocked when I first got a Sony and couldn't find how to set the Rear Dial to ISO (not the back Control Wheel). I was sure I was missing something, but turned out it's just not possible. That's how I've always set Canon and Nikon cameras I had before and didn't even think to check something so obvious. I got used to the Sony but it's still weird that they can't be set that way (not sure about the latest couple of models).
