I have an old Nikon D80, which I have used in the past as a back-up DSLR. Recently it has been showing an 'err' message and the shutter won't work. Internet searches have advised cleaning the contacts on both the lens and the camera body. I've tried this without success. Any ideas please?

Does the "err" message include a number? Searching on that error number might help zero in on a diagnosis.

The body won't take a shot if there's no memory card. It isn't necessary for that card to be missing or not completely seated in the camera - all that matters is that the camera thinks there's no card. So try a different card.

Nikon DSLRs offer a two-button reset option that will reset the camera back to its factory settings. If you use this option, you will lose any custom settings you have accumulated over the years. But that reset might clear a software glitch.

In addition to the suggestions regarding card and factory reset, it might be worth trying a different battery if you have one available.

I have had the exact same symptom with my D7100. "err" displayed and won't shoot. Replacing battery solved the problem (I had extra batteries). When I put the problem battery back in after a recharge got the same error after a few shots.

If you have a screw driven lens fitted that is not set at the min aperture you will get a error massage.

Known problem with the D80 a little plastic wheel that controls the aperature fails. I have two sitting in a bag right now with that problem .

I think the Flashing "ERR" can be the aperature control also. Alot about it online I tried everything on both of mine . Nothing ever worked so I just put them away .

Was going to buy another one but when I started looking the majority of them for sale where for parts only .

Same problem as described by others. I suspect my D80 cannot be fixed again. A repairman named Bob Kilbourn, who passed away a couple of years ago, had a fix and repaired mine once. His camera repair website is no longer active, so I can't say if someone took over his operation or not.

Bob posted his fix along with photos, but it looks like major surgery.

Usually, on a Nikon D80 with an "err" message that won't go away, the Aperture Control Unit must be repaired or replaced. There is a small switch contact held on by a small plastic rivet in the Aperture Control Unit that tells the electronics module in the camera what phase the camera is in during its cocking cycle. When that small plastic rivet breaks, the camera can't determine where it is in the cycle and just stops and displays the "err" message.

There are 2 ways of fixing the problem, replacing the part with the same plastic-riveted switch contact or taking the Aperture Control Unit apart and replacing the plastic rivet with a small steel screw which can't break again. I've been using the second method for 3 or 4 years now and haven't had a single body experience the same problem again.

I just found my post from 2016 if you're interested in another thread on the topic.
