My 9 year old has been using my old M2 and 15-45 that i gave him for almost a year and has some good photos from it ..i may post some below

but i think he needs a better body now with a VF as he can struggle in bright sun and AF that can shoot something moving will be helpful, also some external controls and peaking as i have a lot of manual focus lenses he can use and a flippy/tilting LCD as he likes low angle shots

the logical body is the M50 as he has a 15-45 which is a very good copy and batteries etc

however, i am surprised how much the M50 makes second hand compared to what they are new (in the UK) so looked for alternatives and i see the XT-20 often is cheaper ..probably as its a bit older and has been superseded with the XT-30

The fuji has plus points like more external controls, and i still have some mount adaptors for MF lenses from when i had a XE-2

there are plenty of reviews on the M50 and the XT-20 but non compering the AF side by side i think this may be a big differentiator between the 2 but i don't know so has anyone had both so can give an opinion

also sony is a possibility as leftover from a NEX3c i still have is a sony 18-55 (not as good as the 15-45 or EF-M 18-55 had to stop it down at the long end) but i do have the very good sigma 30mm F2.8 and batteries and mount adaptors

i was looking at sony up until the A6000 to replace the 3C but as the colours did not get any better and that was the main thing i not like

So any comments on AF are welcome or any more pros and cons

Thanks dave

Edit just notice we never set the date on the M2

Attention Dislexsic i mean dyslexic person... This post will have many although spell checked, spelling and grammatical errs ..its The best its going get so no need to tell me it is bad I know it is .....................................................................................................
the EOS M is not dead and wont be for a long time ....as long as you don't want a flagship camera with a VF...if that's the case it died sometime ago
My 5D IS a MK1 classic
.........................................................................................................
There is no argument for FF vs APS-c (or m43) with shallow DOF..as it's a law of physics and a very subjective personal thing if you want to make use of the shallow DOF only FF can offer

If you wait for a camera that will tick all your boxes ....by then you will have more boxes to tick..... so the wait continues .....David Appleton

The difference in AF between the M50, X-T20 and a6000 is nowhere near as great as the AF difference between any of those bodies and the M2. Any of those cameras will be a massive upgrade in performance and will easily let you son photograph moving subjects. Go for whichever one fits your budget and you think your son would enjoy using the most. Functionally, the biggest difference is probably tilt mechanisms for the rear screens.

Your son has a good eye - nice pix.

I had the XT20 but didn't like the menu system nor the tilt-only LCD. Much prefer my Canon M50 interface, grip and the swivel & tilt screen. You already have the "spare" battery.

I got "hooked" when I got an Honorable Mention award in the 1959 Kodak H.S. Photo Contest.

I had the Sony A6000 and now I have the M50 Mark II.

Imho, the autofocus precision and speed is still slightly in favour of Sony A6000, and the newer A6100 is even better (because it has many more phase points, and it's faster). But I would say that the difference is noticeable only if you use your camera for sports action (basketball in my case). Canon M50 Mark II (I really don't know what's different from the first version) is anyway very capable too.

In favor of the M50 (Mark II) versus Sony A6000/A6100 I see:
- higher EVF resolution (unless you consider the A6400) even if Canon EVF is a little smaller, but it's ok for me, even with glasses
- better kit lens (both for resolution AND aperture, just a little; don't be misled just by the F numbers, because Sony kit lens is slower at most apertures, and according to my tests the M50 is about 0.35/0.4 stops faster than Sony A6000/6100)
- less expensive
- real touchscreen display (Sony partial touchscreen is available only on A6100/A6400 and it works basically only for the focus points) and completely articulated
- slightly better Jpegs with more customizable options

I'd suggest Sony if you plan to use your camera for sport photography because the Axxxx series has slightly better autofocus and better burst mode (Canon M50 is rather slow to record its files even versus the old A6000!). On any other case I think it's more a matter of personal preferences. About the menu system: most say that Sony A6000 menu is awful, on the contrary I was used to it and now it seems to me that the M50 menu system is much worse, even if its touchscreen capability compensates for it at least partially.

About lenses: Sony has more and more interesting lenses for the Axxxx cameras, however most times their optical quality is a little worse than what Canon offers, BUT lenses for the EF-M lens mount are almost all without stabilization unfortunately.
That said the Sigma 56 mm F1.4 that I bought for my M50 is wonderful!

One important point: my Sony A6000 died just after 3 years, because of major overheating problems. I see that my case wasn't that rare, and most old 6xxx were weak about this point (I mean A6000, A6300 and A6500). They say that the newer A6100/A6400/A6600 are better, but I really don't know anything about this.

I didn't say anything about video shooting, and I can't compare that field, because I hardly use my cameras for videos.

I like your son's photos quite a bit (something about apples falling from trees probably comes to mind here. :-D ). I think the M50 would make a nice upgrade!
