Hi,

My Dell XPS 13 has died death, so I am looking for a new machine. Nikon D850/D500 are the main gear. Lightroom and DxoPhotolab, main software. Need DeeepPrime. Lightness is important to restrict wieght in cabin baggage. Prefer touchscreen. Not considering Mac. Prefer 1 TB or larger SSD.

Options?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Microsoft Surface Pro, maybe? Less than 800g (1.76lb).

The max RAM seems to be 16GB, though.

Yes, but Surface Pro SSDs are on the smaller side. Thanks for suggesting anyway.

Regards

Thanks, will look it up.

LG Gram series are the lightest laptops on the market. Don't have a specific recommendation, but thought I'd throw that out there.
Yes, it's the only PC laptop rated almost as high as Macbooks by Consumer Reports.

The 15" LG Gram has touchscreen. I didn't check other sizes.

Looking at CR's 2022 annual buying guide, the LG Gram 15 is the top-rated 15-16" laptop. The MacBook Pro 16" is second, the Samsung Galaxy Book Pro 360 third, and the LG Gram 16 fourth.

The recent laptops with 16:10 screens are an encouraging development; I'd like to see a very-high-res 27" or 32" desktop monitor with that aspect ratio.

Yes, some memory problem, the RAM is soldered to the motherboard, so they tell me changing it may fry the motherboard..

If my now ancient Dell XPS 13 died today, I'd order another one tomorrow.

But not new, of the refurb page.

I have an XPS 13 and wish it would fail so I can justify a different computer.

It was my mistake getting it. The display is to small and it does not have a dedicated video card.

If you were happy with the XPS 13, see if Dell will give you a discount on a new one since you are a loyal customer.

Thanks,

Will check it out.

It will take specialized tools and what not to change soldiered ram. Check out dell's inspiron 14 2 in 1. I have this model with the core i7, 64gb of ram and a 4tb SSD installed. Everything inside is upgradeable. Ram, SSD, battery, even the wireless chip can be upgraded as needed. It's super fast, screen is great, touchscreen is pen compatable (great for drawing or editing), and it's solid build quality. I paid 949 cdn for the base system.

I miss my old 16:10 displays, but they are hard to find these days.

Honestly, 3:2 would be my favorite (or 15:10 for comparison). Microsoft has been using 3:2 in their Surface laptops for a few years now.

Dell XPS 15 and XPS 17 screens are 16:10 now. XPS 13 as well (just checked).

The XPS 17 can take two SSD drives. Do you know of other laptops that can do this? Most seem built for a single hard drive. I'm not sure what they're doing with all the space, now that optical drives are mostly discontinued. Aha, LG Gram 17 can be expanded.

XPS 17 lacks numeric keypad, a show-stopper for my wife. Lack of discrete GPU in the Gram 17 would probably be OK with her.

3:2 would be great for image display; I'd happily accept that too. OTOH, 16:10 and 16:9 do allow for editing menus on both sides. :-)

I certainly like my Surface Pro, but it's too low-powered and the screen too small for me to want to edit on it.

Update at https://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/65667003

Thanks for all the inputs, I think I have decided to buy a ASUS Zenbook 14 Duo.

19-13900H, 32 GB RAM, RTX 4060 graphics card, all within 1.7 KG (3.3 pounds)

Hope it works well
