I feel like I'm missing a simple setting somewhere. I have a new Nikon Z5 and I'm using my Yongnuo YN685 on the hotshoe. The flash has worked well on my D7100 but on the Z5 I can't get it to fire in i-TTL mode. When I adjust the zoom on my lens, the flash reacts and updates on the screen to reflect the zoom so I know they're talking. Flash also fires fine when in the flash is set to Manual mode. But as soon as I change it back to i-TTL, no flash.

I've updated the firmware on both camera and flash. The camera is mechanical shutter mode, not silent mode.

Now when I hook the Yongnuo YN-622 controller on the hotshoe, it can fire the flash just fine in i-TTL. So all of that, makes me think I just have a wrong setting somewhere.

Thanks for the help!

Hi John,

I have exactly same issue. I bought an YN685 flashlight for my Z5 camera, and I able to use in iTTL mode with YN622N-TX controller only. Last night I updated the controller and flashlight firmware, but the problem is not solved.

Did you found solution?

May not be compatible. I had the TT685 when I had my D750 but sold it after I moved to the Z system (and upgraded to the Godox system). Maybe look into getting something like a Godox TT685 which does work with the Z cameras). Costs about the same as the Yongnuo.

Nikon changed the flash functionality in the Z system I believe, so if it is not fixed by doing a factory reset or updating the firmware, my guess is that on-camera TTL (where the flash is mounted to the camera) may not be possible. Nikon did break compatability with a lot of third-party flashes when they introduced the Z system, but some (like Godox) have updated their firmwares to support the Z system. So I would recommend looking there.

There were definitely changes to the Z's flash system. A tried and trusted YN968N didn't work with new Z6 II, so I purchased a YN689N-II which works fine.

Unfortunately, Yongnuo support leavea ALOT to be desired.

The Yongnuo's are very inexpensive, so I honest'y don't have a problem upgrading the YN968N after the years of use it gave me. When my second Nikon-brand flash died, I had no problems in gettin an extra Yongnuo.
