I have a new DELL XPS8940, 64G, GeForce 3060, core I7 11 gen

ran a speed test against my DELL 8900, 16G, GTX 745, core I7 6th gen

Everything using SSDs.

I ran 10 CR3 files in batch mode through SharpenAI with identical setting.

8940: about 90 seconds
8900: about 37 minutes

happy

That’s 25x faster; very satisfying.

Can you say what component of the 8940 is responsible for the improvement?

There’s a CPU/GPU option; I’d guess that the 3060 is key if you are using it.

I have to assume your older machine did not have a discrete GPU as Topaz sharpen AI is almost unusable with only the CPU, as just about anyone who uses the program has found out the hard way.

Now if Topaz could just fix the preferences to remember to always use the GPU that would be swell.

The 8900 does have a discrete GeForce GPU, but clearly generations behind the 3060.

Happy would be an understatement.

I have to upgrade my desktop; this gives me some targets.

I am starting to look into replacing my desktop. Can you tell us which CPU you have in the 8940? Currently the i7 CPUs Dell lists are the 11700 and the 11700K.

I got the 11700K for the higher clock speed.

Thanks! I think I am looking at the exact same model. If I get that kind of speed in Topaz I'll be ecstatic!

Just know in a month or less Intel is releasing a generation. Unless you need something before than waiting might work for you.

That's more than you would expect based on their respective 3Dmark ratings:
  • 2175 for GTX 745
  • 16675 for RTX 3060
  • (7.67x)

GPU memory (not specified, unless I missed it) could be a factor.

It will help as a space heater, also!

I had the new machine and the old both running as I transfered data.

I also had an overhead light and a few minor things running.

When I tried to print an email, my laser printer started to print and the 15 amp relay tripped.

Yes, this takes a lot of power. :-(
