I’m looking to get a new 35mm film camera for street photography. I have a lot of experience with SLRs but maybe it’s worth trying out the range finder? Any you recommend?

Minolta CLE/CL or its precursor, the Leica CL, are still affordable M-mount rangefinders, and often sell with the compact Minolta/Leitz 40mm.

yes minolta cl or leica cl. personally I avoid the cle with electronics - no idea if they are repairable.

Leica M3, M2 or M4 - I think the m3 doesn’t have frame lines for 35mm let alone 28 - forget which M do.

Had an m3 - super quiet cloth shutter but sold it - all m’s seem expensive now and need to allow for servicing if it hasn’t had one recently.

35mm cameras which used to be thought ideal for street photography were small, semi-auto Japanese rangefinders with fixed lenses of around 40mm. Canonet QL 17 and 19, Konica C35, Ricoh 500G, Olympus 35RC, Minolta Hi-matic series, there were quite a few. The Canons are quite in demand and thus fairly expensive but the others are affordable from eBay. I’d go for the Ricoh. Decent quality, never as iconic as some of the others, quite a bright viewfinder with a clear rangefinder.
