Sony RX100 as a webcam and swelling batteries

I have an RX100 V and a few days ago I finally decided to put it to use as a webcam for remote working. I bought a micro HDMI to regular HDMI cable and a cheap (but good) capture card. For power I ran it off an internal battery and connected a USB wall charger via the micro-USB port.

All was well. However, I noticed that the battery I had been using was thicker in the middle than on the edge. So it seems that it was swelling up. Thinking that this must have been happening before, I switched it around with another battery that I think was pretty flat.

This battery is now also showing signs of swelling up. Both batteries are genuine Sonys as far as I can tell. I bought the second battery myself via Amazon about a year ago.

I have ordered a dummy battery for the purpose of using my camera in this way. But now I’m starting to think that maybe having it run on a battery with the USB cord plugged in all the time may not have been helping.

Does anyone have a similar experience?

Thank you.

No and I have done video when connected to USB for years. I wonder if your batteries are counterfeit? That is possible even if it says Sony. As another point when hooked to the USB port while using the camera turned on it bypasses the battery.

Heat is the demise of these batteries.

I have more than a few older Sony NP-BX1batteries that I will not insert into my RX100V, or even FDR-X1000V/HDR-AS200. They do work well enough in my FDR-X3000 which side loads them.

My GoPro batteries are under severe heat and I've lost quite a few recently.

As I said, I don't think so. I checked Youtube videos on how you can tell.

Strange that it still needs a battery then.

Yes, it is strange. Why Sony did that is unknown. There might be a technical reason we don't know about.
