Hi all,

I just took delivery of my Canon pro-1000 last night. I've been consuming Jose Rodriguez's youtube content nonstop over the last few weeks. I've already ordered and received the precision colors ink monitoring kit, and my plan is to use their signature ink series to refill once my first carts start getting empty. My plan is to do the drill method with a rubber plug.

That said, I know it's recommended to go with the "clear" rubber plugs for the refill hole, but I was wondering if someone who has the same system and experience with plugs they like wouldn't mind sharing where they ordered them from. I see plenty on Amazon that seem to be marketed for ink refilling, but I know not all carts are the same.

I'm also looking to pick up the plastic drill bit to help avoid getting plastic material in the cart. If someone has a link for that that's be great, although I assume that wont be hard to find.

Thanks!

Post the question on the plugs and he or others will answer there. Also, send an email to Precision Colors and they will tell you where to get the plugs.

The Pro 1000 is filled through the hole where the ink comes out of to go into the printer. You don't drill any holes in the cartridge.

Wow, that's a really ugly hack for the printer. Good thing I have a cover for mine.

If drilling is required, I'm not doing it. I thing it's too big of a risk to contaminate the cartridge. Not an issue with the Pro-100, but I would worry about permanent clogging of the Pro-1000.

Not to mention that Canon won't do any warranty work if you don't have their ink in the printer.

Thanks for the reply. What do you mean by when you say at least you have cover? Are you referring to the ink cover being down? That is a downside to this method for sure. That said, it's mostly covered by the paper tray anyway so I'm not too concerned with the appearance.

Do you personally refill a Pro 1000? If so, curious what your preferred method is. Replacing chips every time seems very tedious and I'm concerned the plastic cover will eventually break on the cartridge.

I mean I have a cover for the printer; it goes over the printer and completely hides it.

I do personally refill both my Pro 1000 and one of my Pro 100s. For the Pro 1000, replacing the chips is straightforward; old one pops off, new one pops on. The Precision Colors refills come in pre-measured bottles to fill a cartridge once it empties. The special cap inserts into the hold in the cartridge, and you squeeze the refill bottle repeatedly until it is empty.

Refilling the Pro 100 is more challenging. The cartridges have to be prepped, unless you buy pre-modified cartridges. I have the needle tips on each bottle. But getting the tip in/out of the cartridge without spilling is tricky, and you have to keep an eye on how much ink is going into the cartridge. I then use a chip resetter to reset the chip.

The advantage of refilling the Pro 100 cartridges is that I can top them all off at one time, thanks to the chip resetter. With the Pro 1000, I only refill ones that have gone empty, so it's more sporadic. Although the last time I did refills, I had 2 cartridges go empty together, and then all 10 of the remaining cartridges went empty. That might seem odd, but when the printer runs a major maintenance cycle, that's quite likely to happen.

For all printers, I always have a set of refill ink or OEM cartridges (and a maintenance tank for the Pro 1000) ready to go. I don't use the low ink warning to buy ink; I buy ink as soon as I run out of a refill or OEM cartridge. I don't want any availability issues to interfere with my printing.

The plastic cover on the Pro 1000 ink may eventually break. I haven't seen any empty ones for sale; but I haven't looked yet. I just figure I'll switch to OEM and update my profiles.
