During my vacation I took many video clips with iPhone 12 pro (4K, 24p, 10 bit dolby vision). Many clips look really good when viewed with an Apple device but I have hard time to get decent colors with Resolve 17, either on Mac or PC.

So far I have using:

- DaVinci YRGB Color Managed; DaVinci Wide Gamut

- Input color space seems to be automatically Rec.2100 HLG

- Leeming One LUT (Sony/Panasonic) HLG LUT (also tried color transformation)

The clips look pretty good, but no as good as viewed with QuickTime, Photos, iMovie on M1 MBA. I don't have FCP and I would like to mix iPhone clips with BMPCC 6K footage (which sometimes work surprisingly well together...).

Any advice?

I wouldn't use Leeming lut on Iphone dolby vision videos and I don't sharpen them because they are allready processed in phone.

I only do some WB correction.

If you are using SDR monitor and you have enabled dolby vision you can in the color edit page choose dolby vision and 100 nits.... and analyze all clips and you get a pretty good idea what colors look like.....

do your grade and then output

Then I use Handbrake to make a MP4 file (the x265 must be the 10bit version otherwise there is no HDR).

Thanks for the advice. I tried to follow the instructions but I was not able to adjust anything under the Color->Dolby Vision tab (everything is greyed out)

MacOs, Resolve Studio 17.3

Do I really need to use HandBreak?

I tried the Dolby Vision color tab on Windows, and there it worked differently: when I pressed "Analyze selected" the Resolve adjusted colors and they look pretty good. However, the functionality stopped working after a while :-(

The analyze is for you to see how it looks when on SDR monitor

Do your changes like you did before not in this Dolby vision window.

You are not forced to use Handbrake.

The file you get from Davinci Resolve is hugh and bitrate is 800+ mbps.

This is why I use handbrake to shrink it down to more convinient bitrate around 80mbit.
