I have what must surely be a silly question. I'm trying to set up my new S5 in my usual simple way so that front dial changes exposure compensation, back dial changes aperture and control dial changes ISO.

However, I can't find a way to set the front dial for exposure compensation.

When I go to Settings - Dial set - Assign dial, I'm offered Sets 1 to 4, none of which offer exposure compensation.

When I go down from Assign dial to Dial Operation Switch Setup, front dial, I'm offered Exposure Compensation. But when I select this, there is no obvious way of setting this selection and the front dial remains unchanged.

The most irritating aspect of this problem is that at one point I had the front dial changing exposure compensation. Having got lost in other changes, I reset to factory settings and now can't get to where I was before.

Any help welcomed, thanks in advance.

Assign Dial set 4 will put program shift / aperture / shutter speed on the rear dial in P / A / S modes. Putting exposure compensation on the front dial will then give you what you want in those modes. In manual mode you'll get aperture on the front dial and shutter speed on the rear dial.

Unfortunately this doesn't work. I can set composure compensation on the front dial but this does not translate into action, the front dial still stays as previously set.

Odd. It's how I've got it set up and it definitely does work, so there must be another setting that needs to change.

In Setup - Dial - Exposure Comp. Disp. Setting I have Front/Rear Dials set to [exposure comp symbol] for front and rear. Maybe try that?

Edit: No, not that - just checked.

Maybe do a factory reset and start fresh? Sometimes that's the easy way to go, especially if you haven't set the camera up totally yet.

Having called the London Camera Exchange, from whom I bought the camera, I now understand that the option 'Control Dial Assignment' refers to which dial I should turn AFTER pressing the exposure compensation button.

To get the wheel operating exposure compensation without first pressing a button, I had to go down to 'Exposure Compensation' in the same menu and select the wheel of my choice.

It makes sense now, but this option comes after two options that look as though they would get the required effect but don't. Could be labelled better, but all is well now.

A couple more changes I haven't yet found a way of implementing, but I'll try again tomorrow before seeking help.

In any case, thanks for the responses.

Yes. Sorry I didn't make that a bit clearer: I was referring to the Exposure Compensation option on the Dial Set menu, and was wondering what could have stopped it working...

It reminds me of some "fun" I had with my GH4 once: I'd turned on the audio level meters while recording video and, when I went back to photos, they were still on the display but the menu option to turn them off was greyed out. It took me ages to realise that I had to go back into video mode to re-enable that option.

That said, I do like the fact Panasonic cameras are so configurable that you can set them up to work how you want them to.
