New photos of the back of the Z9 at the Olympics

I must admit a Z9 which is lighter and smaller than a D850 would get my interest. I understand the height maybe taller but every other dimension should be smaller.
I guess everybody's preference is different. I have been using a D5 for the last 5 years and am happy with its size. Prior to that, many years ago I also used a D2X, F5, and F4. (I still own all of the above cameras.) I actually find the Z6 too small.

I am glad that the Z9 has an integrated grip, which implies a high-capacity battery such as the EN-EL18, and it has room for dual CFexpress Type B memory cards. It looks like the Z9 has no buttons to the left of the rear LCD. From the front, it also looks narrower.

If you prefer smaller bodies, the Sony A1 is quite small and so is the Canon R5. They are too small for my liking and neither one of them has dual CFx Type B slots.

I also wouldn't mind having 24MP just like the Canon R3, but clearly plenty of people prefer to have 45 to 50MP.

In any case, I am sure some photographers at the Olympics know who is testing the Z9 for Nikon. Perhaps several photographers are testing the Z9. Expect more leaked images of the Z9 in the coming days as the Tokyo Olympics still has about 10 days to go.

I hate the idea of a really big body. Before, bodies were bigger because they had to be. The Z9 should be bigger than the rest of the Z bodies, but it would be idea if it were the size of a D850 or just smaller.

I don’t know that I like the idea of companies making massive bodies in 2021, just to remind users of back when they had to be massive.

It looks like a non tilting screen , which would be a deal breaker for me. Not sure about the two bits of tape however? I first thought the tape might be to keep the screen from tilting out, but I don't see an obvious seam around the edge to support that thought.

Randy
There is tape all around the screens edge. It's pretty hard to tell what is what and i am sure this is a prototype model. Release model could be pretty much any type of screen.

My biggest concern is that the Canon R3 turned out as 24mp. I hope Nikon will stick with the 45mp minimum.

If the Z9 turns out with a 24mp sensor after all this waiting, that would be so very disappointing.
I don't quite understand this point. Nikon have already stated that the Z9 will have 8K recording. It's impossible for it to have anywhere near 24MP.
I would expect the Z9 to have at least 45MP, more hopefully. They threw the industry for a loop when they released the 36MP D800 and its time to up the ante once again. 80MP? 100MP? We will have to wait and see.

Remove the mirror and the prism from a dslr and you potentially get a shallower and squatter camera but you still need room for everything else. Have you seen inside of a pro D body? There’s not a lot of empty space; they didn’t make the body big just for the heck of it.

Secondary question is that a Z 100-400 or a 180-400 in the second picture?
Definitely an 180-400, probably the F-mount f4 version (rather than a Z-mount special version). There is clearly a filter holder on the lens barrel with a little handle to unlock it. I wouldn't expect a filter holder on a smaller tele zoom such as the 100-400 S.
Quite probably, but it could also be a Z 400 f2.8S that they are testing. :-)

Removing the mirror box lets you have a camera body that is less deep, and all Nikon 1 and Z bodies have the sensor quite close to the mount.

I like to have the integrated grip. An add-on grip would actually make the camera even bigger than one with an integrated grip. It provides space for a large battery and two CFx Type B cards.

Another issue is heat dissipation. Some of the early Sony bodies were notorious about overheating, and so is the Canon R5. Once you have 20 fps, 30 fps and/or 8K video, you may need more space to dissipate heat. I have seen some discussion that the next generation of R5 may come with a tiny fan.

After the Z9, there will likely be a Z8 that is direct competition to the Canon R5. For those who prefer a small body, you may want to wait for that or just get the R5 or A1.

Don't you see the ...0-400 on that lens? I think it is definitely a zoom that ends at 400mm.

Could the tape be covering ventilation like the Panasonic S1H?

It could either be a secret or not fully waterproof yet.

I did see part of something, but it is only a very small part of a figure. It does look like it could be the tripod mount for the 180-400 f4 (it has 180-400 written on the back of the bracket) and it is most probably the 180-400 as you say, but I am hoping it may also be a 400 f2.8S. It may say S-400 f2.8. :-)

Didn't Canon state the same for the R3?
Canon themselves certainly never did, and they are not responsible for any fake news from other rumor/speculation sites.

A couple of months ago, on June 2, 2021, DPReview had an article on the info on the R3 so far. They specifically mentioned oversampled 4K video footage but not 8K:

https://www.dpreview.com/articles/6906944718/everything-we-know-about-the-canon-eos-r3?slide=5

And there are speculations, of course, that there will still be a Canon R1 above the R3. If so, that one will have all the features and expect it to be very expensive.

On the other hand, on Nikon's own web site, they explicitly mention that the Z9 has 8K video: https://www.nikonusa.com/en/nikon-products/z9iscoming.page

I stand corrected, and relieved! Thx! :)

New photos are out of the back of the Z9. Looks like there's an articulating screen, pretty different look from a D5/D6?

What does everyone think?

Not being sarcastic here, but "doesn't matter to me". And by that I mean it looks very similar others (the D5/D6) they've released in the past (minus the missing LCD display on the back).

I mean, I think many are more interested in the specs and performance. All pro bodies tend to look very similar in most cases. I mean the R3 looks similar to the Z9 (in a general sense; I mean the buttons are in different locations but same overall layout with built-in battery grip).

I'd be interested in seeing the test results and reviews once it's officially announced to the public and people (reviewers) start getting at least pre-production or "full production" models.

There appears to be a small indent in the top left corner above the screen which suggests it can be pulled away from the camera back (folds out). If this is the case, then it's a bit of a departure from Nikon's typical pro level DSLR (D4/D5/D6) which has fixed screens.

You can see the bump on the right hand side for the built in teleconverter.

looks bit shorter than D5/6.
Compare it to a Olympus E-M1, it looks to be a similar size to that, I have one and find it the most comfortable body I have ever used, and that includes single digit Nikon bodies.

Ah yes, I can see that now.

Not arguing about your feelings or thoughts. I just find it interesting what people declare as deal breakers.

When moving to the Zs I've had some things from the Pro DSLRs which I would have liked on the Zs a lot. Like the 10 Pin connector (for GPS) and backlit buttons. Even two cards on the first gen was something to think about. But deal breaker? Nope.

True but in my experience some care more about the looks than actually the use of a camera.

;-)

Using the hotshoe size, I compute a width of the body of 134mm (which is 20mm less than a D6) and a height of 138mm (which is 22mm less than a D6).

If correct it means that the Z9 has a size which is basically identical to that of a Z7II with a vertical grip.

Nature photography is my main interest, and I shoot a lot of my images with the camera as close to the ground/water as possible. I have used right angle finders for years to facilitate that, but there are many times when a flipped out screen would be superior. I have been spoiled by the flip on screens on some of my "non pro" bodies.

I have had the Z9 on pre order since it was first announced , so I am pretty serious about it, but I guess we. all value various feature sets in different ways, depending on our needs.
