New photos are out of the back of the Z9. Looks like there's an articulating screen, pretty different look from a D5/D6?

What does everyone think?

Looks like its not vaporware anymore, and it looks sexy!

It looks like a non tilting screen , which would be a deal breaker for me. Not sure about the two bits of tape however? I first thought the tape might be to keep the screen from tilting out, but I don't see an obvious seam around the edge to support that thought.

Maybe the tape is to cover up the fact that it is a tilting screen.

Secondary question is that a Z 100-400 or a 180-400 in the second picture?

There is tape all around the screens edge. It's pretty hard to tell what is what and i am sure this is a prototype model. Release model could be pretty much any type of screen.

My biggest concern is that the Canon R3 turned out as 24mp. I hope Nikon will stick with the 45mp minimum.

If the Z9 turns out with a 24mp sensor after all this waiting, that would be so very disappointing.

There's definitely tape to hide the fact that the screen opens up. If you look closely you can make out two hinges on the bottom showing beneath the tape. There's a Nikon patent from the end of last year (JP2020178341A) which describes a fold out screen and the ability to display in a second screen an area of interest and even have different shooting frame rates for the two.

I don't think it's so much to hide the fact that it folds out but rather that it's a prototype and may have issues with the screen that need to be resolved or that particular photographer doesn't want to risk the screen getting caught on something when he is moving quickly to take photos and damaging a prototype. Or it could just be his preference.

I don't see the logic in hiding it's a folding screen as tbh that's not really a big secret and is pretty standard. It pales in comparison to having it out in the wild at the olympics for other photographers to see, be candidly photographed, etc.

Definitely an 180-400, probably the F-mount f4 version (rather than a Z-mount special version). There is clearly a filter holder on the lens barrel with a little handle to unlock it. I wouldn't expect a filter holder on a smaller tele zoom such as the 100-400 S.

good point

From the back side, it looks like a narrower body, without a column of buttons to the left of the rear LCD. That is a big different from the D5 and D6. That is consistent with the Z9 front image Nikon themselves have released:

Hopefully there is sufficient space in the narrower body to use the old EN-EL18 family batteries for the D4, D5, and D6, although there may be a new variation for the EN-EL18.

That would be fantastic! Especially if you can shoot multiple images with the view zoomed in and not have to rezoom in after each shot. The Z9 would be a dream to shoot in MF mode. I have a feeling Nikon is going to kill it with this camera!

It will depend on whether Nikon wants this to be the D6 replacement or the D850 replacement. The Canon R5 seems like it was the 5D replacement while the R3 looks to be the 1D replacement.

Nikon could go either way.

I don't quite understand this point. Nikon have already stated that the Z9 will have 8K recording. It's impossible for it to have anywhere near 24MP.

The eye piece isn't the typical round eye piece of the high end DSLRs, It looks more like what we are seeing on the Zfc.

It merely confirms that the single-digit Nikon DSLR remains the all-time best design for a digital camera. :) Old fuddy-duddy with D3X and D4 speaking. Of course, time marches on in its annoying way, and Z is going to take over. I certainly plan to upgrade my Z6, but only wish that the Z9 had retained the secondary back LCD. Plus, OLED cannot show anything when powered off, while the classic LCD can show useful info with camera in the off state.

Always two steps forward, one step back.

Very secret service. Is this it, or a decoy.

Didn't Canon state the same for the R3?

Canon themselves certainly never did, and they are not responsible for any fake news from other rumor/speculation sites.

A couple of months ago, on June 2, 2021, DPReview had an article on the info on the R3 so far. They specifically mentioned oversampled 4K video footage but not 8K:

https://www.dpreview.com/articles/6906944718/everything-we-know-about-the-canon-eos-r3?slide=5

And there are speculations, of course, that there will still be a Canon R1 above the R3. If so, that one will have all the features and expect it to be very expensive.

On the other hand, on Nikon's own web site, they explicitly mention that the Z9 has 8K video: https://www.nikonusa.com/en/nikon-products/z9iscoming.page

I must admit a Z9 which is lighter and smaller than a D850 would get my interest. I understand the height maybe taller but every other dimension should be smaller.
