I received my EM1X and MC20 this weekend (finally. could not resist the $1799.00 price from Adorama). Unboxed them and put my 40-150/2.8 Pro. As soon as I turned the camera on, I got the message "Check Lens Status...". I removed the the MC-20 and just put the lens, everything is good. No message and I can adjust the Aperture, Shutter, etc. I charged the batteries, updated to the latest FW on the EM1X and lens. Installed the MC-20 and still got the check lens status message. I've searched if there's a FW update for the MC-20 and could not find any.

Is there anything else I should try before sending it back and have it replaced?

The problem is that I'm in The Marshall Islands (Kwaj) and mail takes forever (to and from). I will try to do more research but if the issue persist within the next few days, I don't have a choice but to request a replacement.

Any ideas, suggestions, recommendations is very much appreciated. TIA.

The standard recommendation with that error is to clean the contacts between body and adapter and adapter and lens, but as they're all brand new, it seems unlikely that there'd be any rust, dirt or grease to remove. Maybe there's a bit of tape, film or other packaging material stuck on the adapter? I would also check the contacts to see if they're properly aligned. Good luck!

Thanks Daniel. I never thought of that one. I guess just excited to try my new system right away. I will do as you suggested as soon as I get off work. Thank You.

Check Lens Status can also mean checking the firmware is up-to-date for both lens & the Olympus MC-20.

40-150mm F/2.8 + MC-20 is a nice combination.

That's what I did. Updated the EM1X (v2.2) and the 40-150/2.8 PRO (v1.3) hoping it will fix the issue. Check lens status... still showed up after the fw updates.

I have also checked the fit and I did not felt any movement at any connection, body + MC-20, MC-20 + lens.

Thanks.

Yes, they are from what I've seen. If I can only get mine to work :(

Good thinking & sorry to hear it didn't help.

I can't remember if the spigot on the MC-20 is fixed or if like the Metabones adapter it detents meaning its a switch? I had problems with my Metabones adapter & the tiny spigot switch was at fault. If it detents on the MC-20 then its also a switch. On the Metabones it prevents power surging through the contacts until the adapter is in the correct alignment position with the contacts & then its released to allow power. When flush with the surface its 'open' & when its fits into the recess its closed.

When mounting the MC-20 there should be a tiny click sound as its springs up into the locking recess. If not then there's no power to the lens.

It might be worth trying to attach the MC20 in two ways:
  1. Attach the adapter to the body and then the lens to the adapter.
  2. Attach the adapter to the lens and then attach both to the body.
I have a vague recollection from when I first got my MC14 that Olympus recommends the first, but both normally actually work. The very first time I attached my MC14 to my 40-150mm f/2.8, I used method 2 and it didn't work. Method 1 did work, but after the first time both worked. This might be related to related to the spigot issue mentioned by Martin in his second post.

Worth a try.

You already tried everything I might have.

I'd check the MC20 functionality on another lens, either another 40-150 or 300 (or, I suppose, a 150-400 should you ever spot one of those unicorns).

I can relate a story of my EC20. The first one I got worked on every lens I owned EXCEPT the lens I wanted to use it on: the 150/2.0. Literally worked correctly on a dozen others. Did you know you can use a teleconverter on a 7-14? Also worked on three different bodies.

After speaking with a real live Oly tech person I sent it in and they replaced it. The second worked perfectly.

In my case, something in the first teleconverter's electronics prevented it from recognizing just that one lens. Probably the quirkiest issue I've ever seen.

Hope your issue is simpler.

Cheers,

Rick

Not read all the replies but I purchased the 2 times convertor a few days ago and encountered the same issue. Very simple fix. Use the Olympus Workspace photo editing application and therein go to the camera tab. Connect your camera. Select the storage option on the camera rear lcd screen and install the updates. I had updates to install for the camera and both the Olympus 300 mm f4 and the 40-150 mm f2.8.

Obviously, when you connect the camera to the computer have one these lenses attached and then if both the lens and the camera require an update you can do them sequentially before turning off the camera and swapping out the lens.

Process takes about 15 mins or so and then everything works fine.

Enjoy the camera.

Thank you all for all the suggestions/recommendations...

After doing all of what's been suggested and repeated all what I have done, I still had the same issue. My final step? I took a pencil with eraser and rubbed all the the gold contacts to make sure no residue was built in, and being careful, now my EM1X + MC-20 + 40-150/2.8 PRO is functioning as it should be. No more "Check lens status..." message. When I turn the camera on, I can the see aperture at 5.6, can focus to anything I aim at (within reason of course). Now time to test it on this weekend when I'm off. Hopefully I can find some local birds.

Again, Thank You All very much!

You all be safe and happy shooting.

There have been reports lenses getting bricked via Olympus firmware upgrade tool. If I understood correctly, you upgraded the lens firmware when the connection with the camera body and the lens was not working properly. That is risky (easy to say afterwards).

For future advice, if problems exist, cleaning the contacts should be the first step (cleaning several times, using different methods). Obviously, the lens firmware should be upgraded without any MC-adapters.

I upgraded the body and lens only as per my OP. This is not my first camera. I had upgraded several cameras, upgraded the fw on my EM1 mk i, EM5 mk ii, Nikon Z6 before. Brand new equipment one would expect it to work after following all the steps.

If the error message appeared while I was out shooting, yes cleaning will the first step.

Well done. I had a similar experience with a brand new EM1 Mk2 last year. No IS with any of my lenses. I tried all of them.

Updated firmware, no luck.

I drove 100 miles to SRS in Watford for an exchange, got the camera out of my bag, mounted a 12-100 to 'demonstrate the complete lack of IS/sync IS' and it functioned flawlessly.

It could not have been anything else other than a dirty contact, with whatever debris being finally dislodged on changing lenses.

It just reminded me of my retail days in the 80s/90s when the majority of 'faulty' cameras and flash units coming back over the counter were fixed with a contact cleaning pen.

i had a similar problem with getting my new MC-20 extender to work with the 40-150F2.8. I got the lens error message repeatedly until:

I updated the firmware of my camera body EM5MIII to the latest version 1.7 using OM workspace software AND i updated the software of the 40-150 lens mounted on the camera WITHOUT the MC-20 mounted with it. the update didnt take hold with the MC-20 in place. Once the lens was updated, i could mount the lens on the MC-20 and then on the camera without error.
