Hi Folks I know this is a older camera but it's still working well and seems a shame to change it, my question is can I get it working as a remote clicker shutter, I suspect it doesn't have IR? I'm not very technical but any help as to will it with wireless or what kind of wired connection to order would be greatly appreciated?

Thank you

Wayne

I don't know the Stylus SZ-17. A quick search of the manual shows:
  • If does not have IR support for the old RM-1 shutter release;
  • It does not mention that the wired RM-UC1 shutter release is an option. Perhaps it will work (it works on my higher end Stylus-1) but I suspect it will not.
  • It has primitive support using FlashAir SD cards to connect to smart phones. In cameras, Olympus incorporated the wifi chip in the camera itself, which allowed you to connect and control the camera from a smart phone app (OIShare). The FlashAir card is in the form factor of a normal SD card, but it has a wifi controller in addition to the memory. The manual speaks of uploading files to the smart phone via OIShare, but it does not speak of being controlled by OIShare, so I imagine it does not support using the smart phone to remotely trigger the camera. I see a few FlashAir cards on ebay, but they are all rather expensive.
So your only solution seems to be modifying a film camera wired shutter release so that it presses down on the shutter button. I did this on my E-P2 when I couldn't use the RM-UC1 due to space considerations:
Olympus E-P2 + 14-42mm lens + homemade shutter release
Olympus E-P2 + 14-42mm lens + homemade shutter release

There is also the tried and true method that families use for holiday photos, of setting the self-timer to 12 seconds with the camera on a tripod, you press the shutter, and then you have 12 seconds to get into the frame before the picture is taken.
