Hi, needing some help please

I have;

A Sigma 105mm f2.8 EX DG OS HSM Macro

A Sigma APO 70-200mm f2.8 EX DG HSM lens &

A Sigma 150-600mm f5-6.3 Contemporary.

I'm interested in a 1.4x Teleconverter that will hopefully work with both zoom lenses and potentially the macro too. Will the TC-1401 converter be compatible with them? Or will the APO? Or do I need to buy 2 separate converters?

TIA

Looks like the TC-1401 is only compatible with the 150-600 Contemporary in your list. The APO looks to be compatible with the other two according to Sigma. The APO's design seems rather generic, so it might work on the newer lens. I am sure it wouldn't be as good optically.

I emailed Sigma at the same time as posting this question, not really expecting a reply, nevermind as fast as this. I'm very impressed with their level of customer service.

My question; Please could you tell me if there is a 1.4x Teleconverter that will work with both; 150-600 Contemporary & APO 70-200 EX DG HSM? Thank you

Their Response;

"Thank you for contacting us. there is a yes and no answer in there. the TC 1401 will work on both lenses. the big question is what camera body are you shooting? most camera bodies will cut autofocus when the starting aperture is above F 5.6. there are cameras in all of the manufacturers lineups they give F8 as a minimum aperture, this means that even if your lens is starting aperture is F8 you would still have autofocus while it may not be consistent with snappy it's still there. regardless of autofocus or no autofocus you would still have metering available to you and could do manual focus." - Marc Farb

Quick question: How is the autofocus performance for the SIGMA 70-200mm?
I've looked at that and couldn't make full sense of it.
Hi it basically means that it's giving you information about whether the lens is compatible with the SIGMA's 1.4x teleconverter or not, whether the lens would still be able to autofocus or not when you are using lenses on different mounts and bodies.

Looks like you are using Nikon from the gear list you have put up on your profile.

Your SIGMA 70-200mm f/2.8 EX DG HSM is fully compatible with a APO 1.4X EX DG TELECONVERTER ONLY with autofocus. If you try using a TC-1401 it MAY not work. I heard that a firmware update will make it compatible, but on SIGMA's website it wasn't clear. https://www.sigmaphoto.com/teleconverter-tc-1401. Best to talk to salesmen and ask them.

Your SIGMA 150-600mm F5-6.3 DG OS HSM Contemporary is semi-compatible with the TC-1401. This is because the autofocus will be effective up to f/8. So at the long end at f/6.3, it may not autofocus anymore. Even if you are not at the long end and probably zoomed in to a certain focal length and you're at f/5.6, you need a body that is F8 autofocus compatible. Look up your instruction manual, contact the manufacturer, do some research, and you might be able to find your answer. But even then it may not be worth it because you're talking about 400mm x 1.4.

Your SIGMA 105mm f/2.8 EX DG OS HSM Macro is compatible with AF but it does not work from 0.45m close up photography, the MFD might have been extended further, which normally isn't good for Macro photography. Might as well use extension tubes for macro work.
The AF is pretty fast in my opinion, I've not used it an awful lot thanks to lockdown here in the UK. It's a hell of a lot faster than the 150-600, even when the focus range is reduced on the latter
Hi, so your SIGMA 70-200mm has extremely fast autofocus right? Just to confirm.

Thank you that makes it a lot clearer. Yes the AF is extremely fast on my 70-200.

To be honest, I thought that would be the case with the macro and I have some extension tubes on my wishlist on Amazon, just more of a "if I have it it's an option" kind of thing

That is only true for the 150-600 C version, the S is the speediest lens I have, when it comes to focusing, with the right camera attached, that is. About a second from close-focused to infinity and back!

The only zoom lens I have that is faster-focusing is the AF-P 70-300 VR DX.
