Hello

I am about to get my first ever Apple product.

iPad Pro 2021 12.9” - 1TB with an M1 cpu

I will be getting the Apple Pencil as well.

I know nothing about Apple, so a bit of a learning curve 😊

I wish to edit my Nikon D850 NEF files on it.

I currently use Capture One Pro V21 on my windows laptop 95% of the time and occasionally PL DxO at times.

Could anyone suggest a good RAW (NEF) editor for the iPad.

There are various suggestions on the web, but which actually handles NEF files and what program is actually nice to use for the basic editing things.

Cropping, Straightening, Exposure Adjustments, Colour Balance stuff.

I only ever do more advanced stuff occasionally and I still have my PC.

I will want to export them as TIFF and/or jpg files to have printed or for viewing on a screen.

If Capture One Pro worked on an iPad then my problem would be solved but it only works on Apple computers not on the iPad.

Thank you

thank you for the suggestion and the link.

i will look now

that looks great,

is really only 8 usd

can't go wrong

I use that too, it's very good. It also syncs edits across devices, so you could edit using it on other devices (if you use them).

You can also use Pixelmator, which is also good value on the iPad. It's worth adding for the cost, and gives you a different set of tools.

Affinity does a lot, but maybe a lot more than you need, and does create huge working files.

There are a number other options too (e.g. Polarr, Darkroom, VSCO), but many have silly In App Purchases, that hide their real cost, or even hidden subscriptions.

And of course there's always Lightroom, but does come with a subscription cost.

I agree with all the above Raw Power and Pixelmator have excellent adjustments and will export 16 bit Tiffs.
Also get Affinity Photo if you like to do photoshop things on layers.
I like all three plus Snapseed with its layers and at least two unique tools, Selective and Tonal Contrast with five adjustments but it won’t export anything but jpeg so nice for the finishing touch. Focos is an amazing app too. The depth perception and adjustments are mind blowing.
Those are my valuable editing apps.

For the price i may well try out one at a time the following and see where I land.

Maube RAW Power is all that I need.

1. RAW Power

2. Affinity Photo

3. Pixelmator Photo

thanks for the feedback.

That's basically all I use on my iPad now.

I start with Raw Power (on my Nikon D5300 Raws), and generally do basic editing. As a starting point I do the following:
  • Import the images (for now I usually do this using Photos on my iMac, and allow them to sync across iCloud. I could also do the using the iPad, as I have an SD card reader I can attach. You can also stick them into a Files folder and work in there if you prefer).
  • Open Raw Power, and carry out basic editing, I start off by clicking the white clipping overlay tool on the Histogram box.
  • Then using the Raw Processing module, I like to do a lot of the work in here, depending on how the image, and the data in the histogram looks.
  • Initially it might be turn down the Boost if the highlights are clipped badly, increase the Black Boost if the shadows show clipping, set the Black Point to unclip shadows. This is just an initial dynamic range recovery process.
  • Adjust Noise settings as needed.
  • Adjust Raw Sharpen and Raw Contrast to suit the image (remember to zoom in to 100%).
  • Crop/straighten if needed.
  • White balance if needed.
  • Tone Settings I use to add further tweaks to recover clipped highlights or shadows. I needed to practice here to find out what settings work best, in conjunction with the Raw Processing module.
  • Enhance if needed to, again to add further tweaks to the highlights and shadows, all depending on the image.
  • Then I go to the Levels module (I just find it easier to use then Curves on the iPad screen). And select Luminance, then Auto adjust, and tweak to suit.
  • Finally I go the the Basics module and adjust Saturation and Vibrancy to suit.
If I find something that Raw Power can't handle as well, I'll then try it in Pixelmator or Affinity, or even try Photos itself (seems to be the only app that actually had Red Eye fix). Or if I want to apply some artistic settings, I might go to these.

Have a look at these too:

And another tip, check out the LUT capability in Raw Power.

And of course, that's all only my own take on using the app, just one way I found to do it that works for me.

All the best.

The one thing that drives me crazy with Raw Power is the lack of sharing. I can’t find a share button so can’t send the image straight to Affinity or Snapseed. If there is a method to share and I’m just not seeing it, please let me know. Raw Power does support Display P3 color space but Pixelmator doesn’t seem to support Display P3. However Pixelmator does support sharing with every other photo editing app in my stable.

They both have excellent HsL features but Display P3 is a wider range and preserves the gamut for a richer image with fewer blown channels.

Pixelmator needes Display P3 and Raw Power needs sharing. They both need layers. Both do have good machine learning that are somewhat different and they can be adjusted from there or totally turned back off.

On an iPad one can afford to buy them all for a few dollars instead of hundreds like you will on a desktop.

Raw Power does sharing. I just tried it, and sent an image to Pixelmator without problem.

The sharing menu is at the top left with the other tools. You may need to add Pixelmator to the list.

You can also add Affinity, but that’s more fiddly, as it’s Affinity that doesn’t properly support access to the Photos library.

Are you talking about Export Settings? There are 3 destinations there Files, Photos and Mail. I can’t see a way to share with any app. Or is Share in another place than the Export box? I’m on an iPad Air 4.

No, in the ‘Share’ menu. This screenshot was taken off my iPad, while using Raw Power, You select this above where it says ‘Library - Info - Edit’, but it’s not there while in Edit mode, you need to be in View mode (if you have the editing tools showing, click Cancel or Done). You only get the ‘Export’ option when in ‘Edit’ mode.

As you can see, Pixelmator is there, I clicked on it and the image got sent to Pixelmator. Just below the ‘Save to Files’, is the Send to Affinity automation I created.

Hope that helps.

Excellent, thank you. Followed the path and many editing apps to share to. I never save the changes and was only looking for Share in the editing window. Excellent info.

Waiting on my 11” Pro to be delivered in two weeks. Already an Affinity user, thinking of getting RAW Power. Can you describe the automation, please?

It’s a bit of a fiddle, but have a look here:

That was reasonably easy once I figured out what it meant (no experience making shortcuts). Thank you.

Yeah, I must admit, it's the only shortcut I've ever created.
