M Type 262 Question

I bought a Leica M Type 262 a couple of years ago (I bought it new) but haven't used it as much as I should. I have been using it more lately and notice that each time I remove the battery my settings reset i.e., time zone, lens detect, ISO, file numbering, and jpeg/raw setting. It's a PIA if I forget to reset everything before next use. Is this typical?

This is my first digital M camera. None of my other digital cameras reset each time (they are not Leica). Am I missing something?

Leave a charged battery in the camera for a couple of days. If, after that, the internal battery doesn’t retain the settings it is dead.

JDL,

Thank you! I always leave the main battery in it and charged so I suspect the internal battery is dead. Is that something I can change out/replace myself or does it have to go back to an authorized repair facility to replace it?

Thank you again for your help,

Don

AFAIK, in Leica M cameras, the internal battery is a small button cell mounted in a battery holder on the main PCB. You have to open the case to access it. So, unless you feel confident about taking your M262 apart with a screwdriver (and, more importantly, putting it back together again) you should probably let a qualified camera technician change the internal battery.

I don’t think it’s user accessible. You’ll probably have to send it in.

SK & JDL, thank you both for your feedback. Guess I'll put up with it for now till I feel like sending it in. I have good mechanical skills but not enough so that I want to tear into my $4k camera. Seems weird that Leica put in a battery that the user can't get to to replace it. Guess that's the price we pay to own a Leica.

Just about every item of consumer electronics has such a built-in battery to maintain a few systems while the main power is disconnected. Under normal circumstances, they last for many years and the user doesn’t even know it is there.

It may be worth fixing it, just to be sure you don’t have a faulty battery that is leaking, for example.
