Just want to be sure I'm not missing anything in the reference manual: is it true that the Z6ii isn't able to export pics from installed cards via USB-C cable connected to a computer (in my case to my iPad Pro via hub)? Are the only two ways to transfer images through the SnapBridge app or via card reader? Wifi transfer is taking ages to export 200 image files to my iPad... 🥱

The Z 6ii comes with a cable that lets you transfer photos to your computer, via the computer's USB port. I did this for a few days until my card reader arrived.

I have an older MacBook I could try it on, but it's not working while connected to my iPad via cable through hub. Will it only work with Nikon's NX software?
Worked for me with Lightroom Classic and Windows 10.

Try with the Mac Image Capture app. That should work, but the crux is that you will need to import it into your Photo app again. This is why I opted for a card reader that I can access from Capture one pro.

Importing to Macbook from the Z6II via USB cable works for me with the Image Capture app and with Lightroom.

My Z7 (I) worked fine with the (linux) filemanager, it probably works with any filemanager of any OS. The camera is seen a just another USB drive by the computer. Look inside the DCIM folder.

But it takes some fumbling withe the cover, cable.

The camera has to be powered on. On my Windows PC, it still shows as a device when the camera is turned off, but with no contents.

Via USB cable, it works the same as a USB thumb drive on my PC.

My experience is that neither a z7ii or z6ii will import raw files into the Photos app when connected via USBC to either a Mac laptop or iPad Pro. The files are unreadable. Using the memory card from either with a reader works correctly.

Connecting the camera to either device and importing via Lightroom works as expected.

If it does open .jpg's, that sounds as if your file manager program does not know what to do with a .nef file.

You need to tell it which program it needs for opening (I think that is called "associating"), or even to install such a viewer program.

It is now native in linux, but years ago you needed to install a separate viewer program like dcraw, ufraw and more. And tell the filemanager to use that for showing .nef files.

mentions lots of progs that can do that (mostly commercial :-(.

Might need it install Nikon's latest Codec for raw files.

P.S.

I see I was a bit behind the times here.

Dcraw has slowed down, and raw formats (and the inclusion of new ones) is now incorporated in:

That is what I called becoming native in linux, this library is included now, so my file manager and Gimp and some more know what to do with raw. And I did not need to install Dcraw anymore since at least ubuntu 18.04 :-).

It is also available for Windows and MacOS.

yes, interesting. Looks like a windows only file. Apple people might have to wait untill apple or Nikon include an apple equivalent. Games all these software firms play. Must rebalance my portfolio, these software techies have gone up a lot recently. Not that they freed many photographers from gotcha's and catcha's.

So. It works with my iPad Pro. Not when using the hub, but connected directly to the iPad's USB-C port. It is listed as Z6 2 in Photos, and it will import the jpegs without problems. I haven't tried RAWs yet; I don't think IOS is updated for Z6ii NEF files. I was not able to import into the Files app directly, which is a bummer. I also tried it connected to my 2014 MacBook Pro: it worked. It doesn't show up as a drive in Finder, but Image Preview and NX Studio were able to import images from it.

Sorry for the false alarm :-|
