Seems like auto-focus improvements for both HD and SMC FA Limited lenses. Here is the KP page:

http://www.ricoh-imaging.co.jp/english/support/digital/kp.html

Does that imply better AF performances for screwdrive lenses in general? I guess only one way to find out :-)
We will see. 😏

One of the key actions of keeping your customer base happy and perhaps attracting new clients is simply to update software on older camera models......

Each body issued means more calculation power and hence new software code written. It's possible that the some of the new application can be applied to older models inspite of the older hardware.....

Fuji seem to good at updating their software. Ricoh should follow the same policy....And it appears they are.....☺..Cheese..

I made the new firmware update for K3II and K1II. No improvement is observed at HD 150-450 mm, HD 24-70mm, etc. So it is not for other lenses than for the ones mentioned above. Whether it's with them, or it's just a matter of marketing? 😏

Yeah they should do it but they rarely add new features. These are just tweaks of AF performance for some lenses. In the past there were some "stability updates". Maybe I am wrong but I don't remember that Pentax would bring some new major function with an update.

Not tried any screw-drive lenses in detail, but my Sigma 150-500mm HSM "birding" lens seemed to be able to keep up with some of the local Harrier population a bit more easily than usual this morning … though that could just be my optimism and good light ;)

This may be too hard to verify other than by impressions and experience, but I am excited. My hunch was that where we would see something sneaky was in live view with face detect selected. I have uploaded the new firmware on my KP, and damn, once it detects a face it is by far stickier and faster and tracking!! Please others try this out and let us know, I am powering up my K-1 to try there as well. Lens used on KP was FA 31.

I have suspected since one of the last firmware updates is that they have been beta testing some face detect ideas and AF improvements on the KP for this new launch, and I think you will all notice a difference in reliability and speed in live view.

All the lenses mentioned in the update are fast lenses, maybe it has something to do with how the camera works with lenses that are faster than f-2.8.

Development of K-3III definitely included new AF firmware developments. Applicable improvements have been allowed to migrate into K-1, KP, K-70, etc.

On the other hand releasing cameras with unfinished firmware that require several updates to fix bugs that should have been fixed during testing, is not a good thing.

Fujifilm may be one of the worst in this regard. Many of their cameras seems to be released with "beta firmware", which may also explain why not all functions are included from day one.

Actually green button metering with manual lenses was a firmware update for the *istD. That is when/why I bought it. But yes, it has been a while ;-)

- Allow single shot electronic shutter with optical viewfinder (pixel shift works though!?)

- Set custom range when to use mechanical or electronic

- Full electronic shutter option for bracketing to eliminate delay between ES shots

- Live view does not flip the mirror and cycle mechanical shutter when using full electronic shutter (durable timelapse mode)

- Focus bracketing

- Allow buffer queue for pixel shift because there is a long delay before you can shoot next pixel shift photo. Camera buffer can hold four pixel shift photos.

- And then the most obvious feature of all which has been requested since RAW photos were possible. Give us the d... RAW accurate highlight alert and histograms. Bonus feature: include RAW accurate shadow alert (custom threshold).

I agree - it is just improvements for the lenses mentioned only.

I would also like to get possibility of exposure bracketing and timelapse. For HDR timelapse .. I don't this this is possible!

Also .. automated lens calibration. .. I think Nikon has this on D850. ... camera focuses using contrast in live view and then compares this with measurement from phase AF.

Auto GPS photo tagging for recently taken images. ... Here is what drives me nuts ... you turn on the camera, take a shot. It will have no location stored because the camera did not lock in on satellites yet. But just 2-3 sec later the GPS locks ... so this just acquired location could be stored in the images that were just taken!

I thought that perhaps since Pentax did the computer upgrade with the release of the K-1ii (the $500 upgrade) that perhaps they might pay more attention to adding features via firmware. I'd even pay for stuff like that, such as focus stacking, better AF, software based "ND filters," or stuff like Olympus' live composite.

Hello

I did update my K1 and KP

What I think is this:

With my FA* 28-70 this changed:

This lens has heavy lens groups and you can feel when the camera did move it quickly and when the nearest focus distance was reached, the camera moved it 'hard' to the stop mark of the lens. This feeling is gone with the update ! It feels smoother now and on that way considerate with the lens mechanical system.

Same with the 3x FA LTD's.

It's like the lens get for the beginning of a movement, more gently accelerated.

I had once to repaired my FA 31mm, after my KP did run it 3x times so hard to the min. lens stop mark for to get the focus (but I was simple too close to the object). Now, the motor stop much quicker to give it up to move the lens-group, when the lens is at it's hard stop.

best regards. KPM2
