Hi guys,

I’m wondering if any of you have inside information on what Nikon is planning for the next major firmware update for the Z6II/7II and what improvements should we expect?

At least for me I hope Nikon improves the subject tracking to be more sticky, also I wish the box was smaller.

Anyways what do you guys think?!

No-one here has any actual inside information.

I would like to be able to choose which items the Disp (Display) button shows.

No-one here has any actual inside information.
And if some-one know it, he/she have a NDA.

The only thing Nikon has stated is that the video ProRes RAW which was planned for this month. Nikon are always very high lipped around features and fixes until they publicly issue them.

To be honest I was surprised they mention the ProRes support in Oct last year, but I believe it was a marketing decision to pursue some to jump ship or to move the the Z II series.

Alas, we'll have to wait and see, but I don't think the firmware has taken full advantage of the dual CPU's within the Z II series..yet

Ability to turn off sensor IR LED for those who have modded cameras.

Extra "I menu" where you can do some quick profile changes.

Turn off rear LCD and EV during longer exposures (if not available now)

Would love battery XX% instead of the current bars.

1. Multiple expo in NEF

2. Focus shift combined into one NEF too

2. Clean HDMI out in still mode

AF improvement.

Z6ii already supports ProRes RAW with the paid-for upgrade. I sent mine to Nikon in January and have been shooting RAW video since then. Perhaps you are thinking of 4K60p which was announced for February?

For my Z7II...

1) Make eye-AF work at slightly longer distances.

2) Allow a function button to toggle between two or more AF modes.

3) Ship me my backordered Z7II grip already!

Smaller interval between long expose timing

Ability to set a temporary min and max focusing distance, i.e to stop it wasting time trying to focus on objects at infinity.

On 22 Feb for the new FW? Hope so!

3D tracking and 10 bits internal video recording will make my day.

- Ability to change focus sensor box color and add AF verification for AF-C

- Show on top LCD the AF mode/area during changing it

- Add in custom button the change of area modes with a single press (not press+dial)

- Apply the Z9 menu layout

- Show 'no card' on top LCD

- add option to change exposure mode for U1/U2/U3 without the need to build them from scratch

- Add option to keep speed/aperture between changing modes/banks

- Add sensor shift hi res photo option

- Create NEF for HDR image/image overlay/double exposure

- Improve AF: lower light sensitivity, add 3D tracking, add bird and animal AF, remove the tracking box, improve eye AF regarding distance and low light and wide-area-L shall become closest subject priority (like Dynamic Group-AF in DSLRs)

- 8K timelapse internal

- improve startup time, especially wake up time

1. Add clear display to the display button options, it's wasted on a function button. Have the ability to narrow down the selection of display modes (I only use a couple).

2. Bird Eye AF, 3D Tracking ( I'm not expecting a similar performance to the Z9).

3. Smaller tracking box for AF, focus confirmation.

4. Revamped AF mode selection, it's too clunky for my liking. I think Canon are doing a lot better in this regard.

5. 10-bit internal. Don't think they can do it but I would love it all the same.

So many threads on this... The latest rumor could be for the end of this month. They generally are released on Tuesday nights. I'm hitting refresh on the firmware update list page pretty hard.

So I had hoped that the 400mm F2.8 would need to be added to the firmware which would have added some credibility to an update, but Nikon updated the change log files today for the existing firmware, which now includes the new 400mm.

So I think we are in vapour ware territory, as a result of end user hysteria. Given that Nikon were attending the CP show which has been cancelled for the 23 ish of this month, I can only assume that if we are going to see anything it would be around then.

Alas I think it is looking less likely, and while I have no issues with my Z cameras, I was hoping to see the AF algorithm having an update.
