Hi all,

I've searched through the forum and wasn't able to come up with a thread that covered this, please forgive me if I missed it.

I did find a thread about artifacting in video but that's not quite my issue.

Basically, I cannot find a cable cable of passing full frame 5.9k raw video from my S5 to an Atomos Ninja V reliably.

As nearly as I have been able to find, there is literally only one cable anywhere that claims to be hdmi 2.1 and Micro HDMI on one end and full HDMI on the other. It's the Cabledeconn cable on Amazon.

But even with it, I'm finding that video cuts out on my Atomos Ninja V. My SSD is one tested by Atomos, the WD Blue 1TB, to support ProRes Raw 6k up to 30p (I'm shooting 23.98), so as nearly as I can tell, everything in my chain, based on specs, should work.

Is there a better cable to use, or is it just a matter of being patient and waiting for more manufacturers to start releasing HDMI 2.1 cables to the point that they are ubiquitous?

All help and suggestions welcome. :)

Thanks!

The data requirement for prores raw 12 bits is actually less than 4k6-fps rgb

5888x3312x12x30=7 gbps

Together with the data stream there is also a video feed for monitoring if I recall that is 1920x1080 rgb that is another 1.5 gbps

Total bandwidth 8.5 gbps less than HDMI 1.4 so that is not the issue of your set up

I have a cable that has issue when not used with a clamp and cuts out. I suggest you find a way to secure your cable to avoid interruptions

FWIW I ordered an Amazon Basics cable that was 4k/60hz and got no signal to the Ninja V at all. Just a note for anyone considering it and doing a search on DPReview. It's back to the Cabledeconn for now...

I run Amazon Basics HDMI 2.0 cables from my S1H in ProRes RAW in 5.9K HQ and 4.1K 60p HQ with no problem. Maybe your issue has to do with the micro connector version of the cable.

Yeah the micro connector seems to be the buzz kill here :( . I had no issues with full hdmi ever.

To start with, the 1.4 / 2.0 / 2.1 ratings are basically useless since cheap companies (and some known brands) don't follow the basic specs for those cables all the time.

You need to reference the actually speed rating. If you want to be absolutely safe, get 18Gbps rated cables (listed one below)

I have been using two different combos with perfect success so far

Combo 1:

Small Rig Micro HDMI to full HDMI adapter with an AKKKGOO "8k 2.1 HDMI cable" and everything works perfectly fine.

The small HD adapter anchors into my Small rig L-bracket so I don't have to take the micro cable in and out often.

HDMI cable: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B081WT25Q3?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

This cable is hefty and stuff so it might not be the best for all situations, but it's only a 1 foot cable so it's not too long.

Small Rig adapter: https://www.smallrig.com/smallrig-ultra-slim-4k-hdmi-adapter-cable-d-to-a-3021.html

Small rig L-Bracket : https://www.smallrig.com/smallrig-l-bracket-for-panasonic-s5-camera-2984.html

Combo 2:

Hyperthin Micro D to A HDMI : https://www.hypershop.com/products/htu08

The Hyper thin cable is not 18Gbps, but it hasn't failed me yet. I believe is 10Gbps rated. But it's benefit is that it's thin and flexible

You need a clamp and a simple HDMI 1.4 for prores raw

when you bundle adapters then interface makes the data rate drop so its better to use a single cable

I used the thinnest HDMI cable - full HDMI to micro HDMI I could get from Amazon.

Apologies wasn't clear on my last point. My bad. Previously I had had two other mirrorless cameras to the S5 that had full size HDMI ports, not that I'm using adapters now.

Definitely like your advice on the clamp though. That would be idea. Am researching options that don't require a full cage though. I'm trying to keep the weight of the thing down.

Thank you!

I was considering the hyper cable but was unsure as to its spec.

Love the L bracket setup. Definitely going to look into that!

Both have been great for me so far, but the L-Bracket and small rig adapter are the most flexible for me since I can use the same full size HDMI cable between my S1H and S5, and it doesn't run the risk of damaging the HDMI port with constantly connecting and disconnecting the cable from the camera.

Nice side benefit is having the arca swill plate built into the bottom so I can throw it on any of my tripods without extra plates, and the battery compartment is still accessable with the bracket!

This set up does not work with a cage very well and stops you using a Nato handle.

I never use the hot shoe to connect anything the bracket seems more a choice for photos

Thanks, inspired by your post I used the smallrig adapter you mentioned combined with an arguably slim 8k cable from monoprice. Just recorded 15 minutes 5.9K without any problems. The idea is to leave my adapter permanently on the camera with an L bracket from Niceyrig. The reason I choose for niceyrig is that I can connect the adapter and an extra cold shoe at the same time and the cold shoe connection comes free in the package.

The lightest setup I’ve found is the Atomos shoe mount, some will recommend the cheaper mount for cost but I’ve researched them all and they are flimsy, with the actual atomos shoe mount no issues and that’s all you need to mount to camera

I have had my LUMIX S5 for about 4 months now. I just purchased the Ninja V, downloaded firmware updates, activated the pro res raw activation key. I have followed all the tutorials on how to setup your camera for raw external recording however every single time I switch the camera to raw output my Ninja V reads “no input” and as soon as I switch it back to normal, everything comes back online and I can now record again. I don’t “need” raw recording at the moment however I would still like to know what the fix could be
