My A7Riv does not detect my head and turn on the viewfinder when the screen is tilted

I have my A7Riv set to automatically switch the viewfinder on when something triggers the sensor. However, I noticed that the viewfinder does not turn on automatically when the screen is tilted or pulled out in any way. Is that right or is there something wrong with my camera? I would appreciate input from anyone who has an Alpha series camera.

My A7ii sometimes does that. I flip out the screen to my waist level and the LCD is still black. But so far my A7iii doesn't have this issue.

thats normal behavior.

as soon as the lcd gets moved, the efv is off.

Do you mean the viewfinder LCD is still black?
I guess I misunderstood your issue? My issue is the opposite of yours. Yes, the LCD is black in my case.
Are you sure there's nothing in front of the viewfinder when that is happening? My rear LCD blacks out when the strap or anything else goes in front of the viewfinder. It's pretty sensitive.

I thought the EVF only worked when the lcd was flat against the body? That the standard way to keep it on lcd was to pull the lcd out?

For devices that get hot (with extensive video recording) this would mean you have to push the lcd back to its initial position, use the evf and than tilt the lcd again.

Doesn't toggle EVF/LCD button work?

You can assign a button and do it manually, sure. I do that for video on the older Sony’s to safe on batteries.

I'm not talking full manual switching. Does it work with auto with button to override?

That's how I use mine to auto switch as normal but overide if it gets it wrong, like proximity detection when you don't want it.

Buttons are often reassigned, so this approach might not be available for many users. But it is good to rediscover that such a feature exists and can be assigned.

It's not a bug, it's a feature, and good one at that. People asked for that for a long time. It was so frustrating with the old models shooting from a waist level, the camera would turn off the LCD because it senses the body proximity and that's when you start swearing 😅
