Hi Dpreview friends,

I would like to ask for your inputs on whether to get X-E4 body or X100V?

I currently own 3 fuji lenses: 23mmf2, 35mmf14, and 16mmf14. The 23mmf2 is mainly used. I am looking for a compact camera.

Thank you

Well if you want to use your lenses on this new body there is only one choice.

If you need a truly compact camera I'd look at the XF10.

That is also a change towards a minimalist approach to photography and might be inspiring in certain circumstances..

Fuji has never had a true ILC alternative to the X100 series, the x-e series always had fewer features, the x-e4 continues the tradition, for starters the 100v has a wider, brighter lens and is weather resistant, therefore it's a better camera but obviously less versatile than the ILC.

My vote and choice is for the E4

I'm planning to get the 23F2 to pair with the E4, unless I do a complete u-turn towards the S10 (oh! choices)

Clearly of the two, the XE4 is the obvious choice if you wish to continue using your existing lenses. But if you're considering selling your lenses and going all X100V there are several pros and cons, which for the X100V are readily available on this and other forums and you tube videos.

The main disadvantage in switching to the X100 series is the inability to use your existing lenses. For me, although I love my X100V I would not be satisfied with it as my only camera. However there are many photographers doing quite well and are happy with the elimination of decision with just an X100 series camera.

They are similar in size but still offer a couple different things. Here are the things that come to mind, while I am sure there are many more!

Do you need a screen that flips 180 degrees?

Do you need a fully weather resistant body?

Do you like to have the ease of a build in ND filter? (ND filter can be used for video soon)

Do you need a leaf shutter?

Do need more than one lens?

I have a full sony set up so my x100v is plenty for my needs. It’s really what YOU need it for.

What body do you have now? You could sell the 23 f/2 if you buy the X100V and use your current body with the remaining lenses which would compliment the X100V nicely.
With no d-pad, no MCS switch, no rear dial, no grip, even fewer custom buttons than on the X100V (which I can barely make do with). I wouldn’t likely use the X-E4 if someone gave it to me. I’d much rather use my X-T20 which is also small and still has most standard classic Fuji features.

Heart or head? You've got a 23/2 with the E4 that will be a bit bigger but appreciably cheaper and will act as backup to your existing X mount camera. So head says E4, unless you can pick up one of the amazing bargains for the last few "3"s such as we have in UK.

Heart? Well I'm pretty sure the 100V is the heart choice. I'm certain this line of cameras is exquisite. So much so I've actively avoided handling one as I am sure it would lead me on.

If you are an existing X series ILC user the backup and mix and match with other lenses says follow your head and get one of the "E" series. The 27 is really good too if you want to get the smallest X series setup possible.

Hi, I chose the XE3 and a 27 over the X00F in 2018, because I wanted to have the flexibility to change lenses, I was never going to use the optical view finder (so why pay for it), and it was a couple of hundred pounds (£) cheaper. My head said XE3, heart said X100F, but I went with my head and never regretted it.

Now with the XE4 vs the X100V I would have the same considerations and make the same choice, which for me would be a XE4/27.

But the heart may yet win!

I did the same last year. Buying a used X-E3 left money over for several lenses.

Hey, I remember you asked in the other forum before but were advised to wait & see what the xe4 offered.

Well xe4 IS compact but only with the 27mm lens. However it's missing a few buttons & rear dial that you may be used to (xt20?). It also has no grip...

Given that you prefer the 23mm, your obvious option is the X100V. It's compact & the lens is better than the xf 23mm f2 prime. X100v had many other benefits too...you could easily sell all your other gear for now and be happy with just that.

If you miss your other lenses you can easily buy them in few years with a newer body (ILC)...or you could keep the 16 & 35 & the xt20 if you can afford it.

With the assumption that this is a second camera, get the X100V and sell your XF23-f2. The X100V is much more compact than the XE4 with 23-f2 would be. With the 27mm, the XE4 is technically smaller but I doubt that you would notice the difference. The X100V is superior from a viewfinder, dials, button, and features point of view.

If you use the XF 23mm, i prefer the X100V because it is smaller and lighter. But i prefer the X-E4 with 27mm because i like the 40mm focal length better.

This is good advice, assuming this is a second camera, the fact that the x100V's lens is fixed becomes less of an issue. It's already a more advanced body and with the forthcoming firmware, the digital teleconverter (now allowing RAW+JPG) and the ND-Filter (now available in video mode), will place it head and shoulders above the x-e4 from a functionality perspective.

The V is more compact than the XE+23. The V's 23 is materially sharper and renders better than the XF23/2. If close focus is desirable, the V is the better deal (while the close focus spec in the 23/2 isn’t bad, like the 35/2, it’s not going to produce stellar files close up, at any aperture). The V is WR. 23 appears to be your preferred FL. The V is an absolute joy to use.

I’m not dismissing the XE4. But if I liked to shoot 23 and valued compact, the V would be my choice.

I’ve owned the X100, S, T, V, XE1, 2 and XF23/2.
