I had a large increase in traffic at PhotonsToPhotos from Germany yesterday:

Usually I understand where increased traffic comes from but in this case it's a mystery.
I do know that most of the visits are resulting from a web search rather than links.

The chief reason I look at this is to know what content is interesting to others as well as to sometimes jump into a conversation when it's appropriate.

So, if any one knows that would be a plus.

You probably already know this, but it can be useful to see exactly what URL is generating the traffic. I’ll sometimes see an image get a big spike in traffic because someone has hot linked it in a forum post someplace and so I get a hit anytime someone reads the thread. But looking at the specific URL I can see that no one actually visited my site but instead I got a bunch of hits from the hot link on another site.

Might not be relevant at all in this case though!

Isn't there a way for websites to track what particular search terms are bringing visitors to their website?

Do you know what particular pages they are accessing?

Maybe a popular German YouTuber or something mentioned your website. :)

Thanks for your thoughts.

For privacy reasons I collect only the bare minimum when people visit PhotosToPhotos.

When linked to I do get a referrer URL and I know where that came from.
(Not true when from something like a Google search only from a web page.)

In this case it looks like a large amount of traffic from something like a Google search.
As if the site was mentioned somewhere but not linked to in some topic(s) that are generating a lot of interest.

Google Analytics can provide this information but in the case a high percentage are showing as "(not set)"
Do you know what particular pages they are accessing?
Looks like mostly the main page which is not typical.
Normally people go directly to something like PDR.
Maybe a popular German YouTuber or something mentioned your website. :)
My best guess is the Leica Q2 MONOCHROM results I published on November 19th
Particularly since Leica is manufactured in Germany,
But the 2+ week delay is not typical.

Yes, the Leica Q2 results were also my best guess.

When looking up google, search term "Leica Q2 dynamic range", the fifth entry goes to leicarumors.com: "PhotonsToPhotos published their dynamic range sensor measurements for the new Leica Q2 Monochrom camera".

Then going to photonstophotos.net, under "Recent updates" the very first link is "New Data: Leica Q 2 Monochrom ..."

Also what you said: Manufactured in Germany, so this might be the reason more Germans look it up than others.

The 2 week delay, hmm, maybe people wait until December before trying to make up their minds about what possible presents (for themselves or others) to buy.

Another idea: Who knows, maybe your article about the Leica sensor measurements was discussed in some German photo forum only now, what might explain the 2 week delay.

Right. But traffic I get from places like leicarumors.com show as referrer URLs.
This traffic looks like a lot of Google (or other) searching and then following a result.

Really not important; just a mystery.
