I don't have MacAfee installed, it's not in "Programs" in Control Panel for me to uninstall but I keep getting disruptive popups which stops any work I have in progress. This is on Firefox. I've started using Chrome (this morning) and so far so good.

I practice safe internet browsing but somehow this annoying program/virus/whatever got onto this computer. Help!

I don't know if this is what is happening to you, but if you do an Adobe (reader, flash?) update, they try to sneak MacAfee in the update. You have to opt out to stop it............very annoying.

I reckon you have a genuine or fake McAfee add-on installed in Firefox.

Click ☰ (hamburger menu) > Add-ons, then remove McAfee plug-ins, if any.

Also see the McAfee Knowledge Center article "Your browser displays fake McAfee notifications." Link is too long to post.

If you think MacAfee pop-ups are bad try installing Corel PaintShop Pro.

I've been getting those, too. Thing is, even if they did sneak it in I still don't have it installed. I don't install anything that just pops up on my screen. I think I might have got the virus that spews out the MacAfee update popup on some website that I've been visiting for quite awhile but is now recently infected. Maybe.

I can't find any trace of a fake/real Firefox Add-on for McAfee in Add-Ons, Plug-Ins, Control Panel, nowhere. So I don't have a website name to try to block pushed notifications from.

It wouldn't hurt to do a Malwarebytes and AdwCleaner scan, if you haven't already.

You don't need a website name. You can block pushed notifications from all websites by checking a box at the bottom of Notification Permissions.

Can't hurt. Because it doesn't happen in Chrome, you have what seems like a Firefox issue, but perhaps it's bigger than that.

....Ah yes. That awesome piece of photo editing software where you simply run the program; select the ‘Help’ menu >>’Message Preferences’ >> ‘Do not show me tray messages for this application’.

It's happening to me in Chrome all right. Quite recent phenomenon.

Can you be more specific as to what kind of McAfee pop up it is? They have different products.

They're usually about my "subscription has expired" and I have to renew so click here kinds of popups. I don't think they're actually from McAfee but purely spam hoping I'll click on them.

One time I used AdBlock to block them but I'd block one and another would popup and take it's place, the next one being just a bit different in layout.

They wouldn't just popup and annoy me, they'd completely stop whatever project I was working on (as long as it was a Firefox browser page I was on). I couldn't just delete them and move on.

I'm on a third desktop as I'm typing this. We'll see if they start popping up on this one.

I took a screen capture of it, just destroyed my workflow about ten minutes ago

Notice the very bottom line. It's not McAfee, it's an "affiliate" LOL

Now I'll switch to Chrome to finish the project I was on

I'd suggest running the Malwarebytes stuff that Patco mentioned earlier.

I installed an industrial strength ad block Add-on and that seems to have stopped those McAfee popus. Never say never but it's working so far (AdBlocker Ultimate). Regular AdBlock wasn't blocking that particular pop-up.
