Hi

I am a long time user of 7D Mark II and like it a lot. I use case #2 for BIF and it works great. My 90D arrived and I took it out for a spin this afternoon for BIF. The # of out of focus shots is more than usual. It does look like some AF settings need to be changed. Can 90D users please share AF settings that work for you? FYI: I used 1/2000s this afternoon.

Thanks

Duy

Have you looked at the tracking sensitivity, AF point auto switching and AF Servo priority settings in the 90D's custom function?

If you set them to match your 7D m2's Case 2 settings or whatever suits you, you should get better results.

Also make sure you have set iTR turned off.

Hello pawn,

Here are the settings that I am using for BIF with the 90D and EF 100-400mm L IS II:

-shutter at least 1/1000th s for large birds

-shutter at least 1/1600th s for smaller birds

-f 6.3-f 8 f stop for larger birds

-AI servo Large Zone AF or 9 point Zone AF

-Solid tripod and Gimbal head for tracking birds at same speed to give the AF a better chance.

-Custom Autofocus settings:

-Tracking sensitivity: -1

-Acceleration/deceleration tracking: -1

-AF pt auto switching: 0

-AI servo 1st image priority: equal priority

-AI servo 2nd image priority: focus

-Disable ITR: face priority

There are several other custom AI servo Autofocus settings which I leave on default. These above are the ones that I find useful for tracking large and medium sized birds where their motion is fairly constant. Small fast birds with irregular movements: I am still learning. You can read about these settings in the 90D guide and Greg Bartley has just released his AI Servo settings for the 90D.

I am getting many decent in-focus BIF shots with these settings and lots of practice. :-)

Cheers

Murray

Beautiful shots! It looks like we use similar settings, the only differences I see Is I have focus priority for both first and second. I shoot single point just because it is how I learned to shoot and I hand hold since I hike and shoot.
