Evening all,

Has anyone used the Olympus 100-400mm lens with the 1.4x teleconverter? Does it work well?

Cheers :)

I've been playing with it on my Oly 100-400 mounted on the EM-1 mk3. Seems toy work and be useful but I am not able to get out and about as much as usual (ill-health)

Results so far in various test albums on my flikr site (from my profile if interested)

focuses well and doesn't lose too much detail as far as my tests have gone (unlike with the 2X ;) )

It works - here is a photo of a Robin I took this morning with this lens and the MC-14. This is the full frame image, subject distance is about 8 metres. This is at the full 560mm focal length at ISO 400, I stopped down to f10. It is a raw file post processed in CaptureOne pro to my tastes, a small amount of sharpening added.

Thank you Bill, that is a brilliant image & it’s good to know it works because following this post I have actually picked one up aha so glad it all work well & can produce nice images! Thanks you very much :)

Good to hear! Enjoy your photography Joe. I am liking this lens and it does work well with the 1.4x which I have only just tried today having had the lens for a week.

Cheers Bill, but one thing if you don’t mind, I have just notice you actually only used ISO 400 for the image.. may I ask how you got the image looking so bright as when I tried iso 400 it was so dark, ended up near 6400 iso to be able to see the image in camera at the brightness I wanted? Did you brighten the image in post processing? And if so is that the best way of doing it take the image dark then brighten in post?

Many thanks again :)

Yes no problem I used exposure compensation of +1 when taking the shot due to the bright sky behind the bird. I took photos at 400 and 800 ISO but preferred this one. I do add a little brightening in PP if needed. On the brightening in post some say it is better to expose to the right with the histogram otherwise you will amplify the noise if you take it dark then brighten, but sometimes by under exposing you can get a higher shutter speed if needed. I don’t tend to use the histogram and evaluate the exposure in the EVF, if it looks dark I add exposure comp. You can check the exif of this photo on my Flickr here

Thank you very much for this Bill, very much appreciated & I will definitely take a look at your Flickr for tips :)

Hi Bill, Just wanted to say that I have just had a look through some of your images on Flickr taken with the Oly 100-400 + 1.4x & 2x and they are all brilliant! I have also had a read through some of the exif data for them to and it has really given me an idea of things to try when I practice using the lens alone and with the 1.4x

Thanks again for your help, very much appreciated :)

Thanks Joe for your kind comments on my Flickr. Happy to help, I am liking this lens myself as it has so much versatility. One of the shots I took the first time out with the lens was of the moon with the x2 TC and I was astounded to get a reasonable shot hand held at 1/25s. Have fun with your photography!

Bill

thanks Dave, its going to be a while, the op is now on 24th Oct and it may be around Christmas before I properly active again

Oh well, so long as I have my health ;)

I'm doing as much as I can before as afterwards I've been told I can pick up no more weight than a cuppa, my poor wife will be busy :D
She surely will, carrying your camera+lens on a tripod everywhere ! :D

and handing me my guitar and removing it any time I want to practise (much needed as I haven't played for over 40 years! :) )

Brian,

Life is full of compromises in design and everything else :). I know you know. ;)

That was the beauty part of 4/3. The teleconverters fit all the lenses ( I think) and had no glass elements. My understanding is that results with the 2X were very good. The lens mount was generously sized to the sensor, thus adding to bulk and weight. But delivering probably better results with the TC's than many systems. Especially with a 2X.

Also remembering that 4/3 was bourne before the decision was made that everyone one would ultimately choose FF. So m4/3 downsized the mount and added alot of software correction as needed and has been able to deliver very sharp results with very good corner sharpness on the better lenses.

Alas, the teleconverters only fit a few lenses as it stands now.

Best Regards,

Bernard
