Like a salmon swimming upstream, i just bought an Olympus -

To unload a camera that is a magnificent tool just to be trendy.......

I still have Olympus gear and I switched to Panasonic way before the Olympus sale was rumored. That said it is pure speculation saying other brands will fail. We all will at a certain time.

Bút speaking about speculation:

I see Sony staying in the game and Nikon is probably going to gain market shares as well. Canon, as usual, is the brand to beat...

Panasonic will have to further consolidate its position in videography and will probably continue to offer photo enthusiasts good products.

As for Fuji, I believe their future is uncertain. I love he brand and their cameras are solid ground to build a system upon but the niche they refer to is just too small, imho

Pentax maybe next to retire, in the pipeline.
In other words, pure speculation on your part.

Absolutely, as I declared it. But in contrast with many speculators I don't claim my statements are correct or wise or have any solid foundations other than my own opinions.

My EM1.2 will be here tomorrow or friday. I should probly thank everybody who has dumped them off online, last i checked MPB had a whopping 30 copies of that camera. I got a (new) $1800 camera for $849, 6k shutter clicks, almost new.

I guess it's in my nature to go against the grain, or at least im not afraid to. In this case im not worried at all, the EM1.2 can do anything i need and i will likely buy another in the next couple years for a backup, or for spare parts.

One man's trash is an other's treasure.
The M1 MK II is truly a technical marvel! It is a brilliant camera in many respects and I am using mine until it dies and hope somehow there will still be a worthy replacement at that time. At $849 there just isn't any camera that compares! Congratulations on the purchase!

Congrats. That's a great buy at $849! I would quite likely still be with m4/3 if the E-M5 III was sanely priced and there were fast (f/1.2) primes that were not more than double the price of APS-C f/1.4 or FF f/1.8 lenses.

FW 3.2 is up now. Not much to add over 3.1.
Thanks. Didn't realise. Really waiting for the E-M1X firmware upgrade. :)

Mike

I have a E-M1 ii and some great lenses. I thought of buying another body, since I am in my late 70's and can shoot 10 years and move on. However, I could not resist the E-M1 ii and picked it up with a discount. Does a few more things than the Mrk ii and probalby not worth the extra, certainly not over the used price. Whatever, w don't always do what is logical.

I just shot the Neowise comet with the Mark iii and the great 40-150 F2.8. Made me fell a little better about the investment.

I just received my new to me EM1 MKiii yesterday that was very slightly used, only 320 shutter actuations, plus an RRS bottom plate and a spare battery! I will probably be selling my MKii with 12,379 actuations 😁 It is a great Camera and FW 3.0 made it even better, what a great body. Enjoy your “new” camera, I’m sure it will give you years of dependable service 👍🏻

I have been thinking hard about an EM1.2 also. But I might start with an EM1 for less than $250 to get a taste of M4/3. The 12-40 f2.8 is what I really am interested in so maybe I will rent one for a few days to check it out. Then we will see what comes next.

But why buy into Olympus now, of all times? Because it is what I want! The way I look at it, these cameras will last for many years and there are a huge number of lenses in circulation. So the used market will satisfy whatever lens needs you have. And of course, Panasonic is still in business, so they will be an option for lenses too.

I think the main risk is mainly support. If Olympus Imaging/JIP really hits the skids, there will be no more firmware updates and no new products. But the key issue is repairs. With so many Olympus cameras in use, I expect independent repair shops will fill the vacuum, but they will need parts and that may be the biggest issue eventually. It would be a bit like what has happened to film cameras. Decades after they were discontinued, there is still a market and (some) of them can still be repaired. My guess is that all this will take years to come about and by that time, I will be ready for something new - or my phone will do everything by then.

At a certain stage of life, you begin to see the indefinite future as a much shorter period of time. I am not exactly saying one-year-at-a-time but you become very conscious of all the changes that can occur to your life in five years. So I say, if something works for you, do it! Don't worry about speculating about things that might, could, perhaps, possibly, screw it up. It's not that big a deal!

Don't most of the salmon that swim upstream die along the way, and those that do make it die after spawning.

Peter
Even worse, EVERY salmon ever born died. I know, it's crazy sad.

If budget is a priority, the EM1.1 is still a really nice camera, i gave mine to my dad for fathers day earlier this year. Then i regretted it lol. I did look at another, they are as low as $200 on some sites, that's crazy cheap for what it offers. In the end improvements like the no blackout or freeze frames of the newer model won me out, but the MK1 is still really good, i have a lot of nice photos from it (pic below with my 45m).

I also had 4 MFT lenses still so there's no real "investment" risk for me beyond what i already bought, when my EM1.2 dies, i can go wherever i want, including stay in MFT. The only mark against MFT for me is it's harder to get cheap DOF control, but i had to ask myself how much is enough? Is my 45 1.8 really not good enough?

In the end i decided i would rather give up a little DOF control to gain a lot of other stuff.

I'd say the EM1.2 is worth the extra money. I upgraded in November, having had the EM1.1 since launch.

For 320 shutter actuations, that pretty much almost like new. Lucky you! My brand new EM1 III had almost 200 shutter actuations when I got mine.

Cheers

So true and I hope the trend stays this way should Olympus disappears so that I can enjoy them far longer into the future.

Enjoy your new camera and photography for many more years to come.

Cheers

Thanks. It certainly looks like it is but I figured I would tiptoe into this new pond right now. If all goes well, I will upgrade to the EM1.2 and keep the EM1 as a backup.

Yes, I was lucky to get it! I have bought new bodies with more actuations than that! I had actually planned on doing the Trade Up promotion with an old film camera but this was $200 cheaper and I got the RRS plate and spare OEM battery. My kind of deal!
