Where do I find a good discussion on how to produce a stacked image in photoshop? Found something on the internet...seemed pretty simple. Haha. Tried it. Produced garbage. Grouped photos into layers. Auto aligned. Auto blend. Produced garbage.

Wait. I know. I missed the Zerene software step...you know, the one where you take the layers out of photoshop and put them in a software that actually works. My mistake. How foolish of me.

What is the result you are looking for?

Stacking of images, could achieve few different result for dufferent applications.

For example, I apply stacking for high ISO image (ISO25600), and to mimic ND filter effect mostly. Sometimes I shall also try to eliminate objects from a scene as well. Result are great for the first 2 applications, and mixed in the 3rd.

I use Photoshop and there are many on-line resources/teaching on how to do it.

The following is a stacking for high ISO shot:

The original ISO25600 shot
The original ISO25600 shot

The compared result:

What are you trying to achieve with your stack? If it's focus stacking, then the auto-blend selection was an appropriate start. However, if the purpose of the stack was to increase DR, reduce noise or increase resolution, then auto-blend was a mistake. In those cases, you need to blend the layers by manually reducing opacity of the layers up the stack, masking between the layers to ensure the desired portions of each layer are included or by converting the layer stack to a smart object and using the mean (or median in some cases) blend mode.

Um, yeah...that's the point. I'm a PS newbie. So, apparently, one needs to be an expert in PS to do anything. Thanks. Zerene or Helicon it is then.

Focus stacking...sorry I didn't mention that in my original post. The resource I did find mentioned in the comments section of his site that his attempts didn't always work and he had to retry them. Maybe I'll eliminate some of the images...get the number down as small as possible and see if I can get a decent product, then maybe add images in subsequent trials. Experiment.

If PS was so great at focus stacking...Helicon and Zerene would fold.

Affinity Photo is better at stacking than Photoshop.
