Where was the image taken? Difficult to say based on the image.

Based on the ear size, I would guess a cinnamon black bear, though it almost looks like the female has a hump and the claws look a little long for a BB.

aspen, so on that basis one would expect cinnamon

claws do indeed look grizzly. And agree on the potentially faux hump. Eyes a bit too close for cinnamon, while face overall look more black bearish. Baby bear more grizzly imho.

hence The question

The black bear has a forehead to nose shape (viewed in profile) that's almost a straight line, while the brown/grizzly bear has a distinct brow. The face-on view of the bear on the left doesn't give a good view for judging this, but the one on the right has the black bear shape.

I agree, it also seems Grizzlys are a bit more furry, another shot:

Thank you!

Definitely a black bear.

Cinnamon colored bears are the same species as black bears, they're just a different color -- think brunettes, blondes and redheads -- and are much more common in the west than in the east. Some black bears exhibit a bit of a hump depending on how they're standing. Here's an old photo from one of my first digital cameras --

Yes, they are the same species. And a black bear with black markings can have a cinnamon cub. Here's an example of a sow with a cinnamon yearling cub.

Such deep knowledge.

I think location calls out the name grizzly vs brown bear. Which ever it is you are in it's path!

Thank you all

for amazing answers!

To me, it looks like a black bear, cinnamon coloration. They do occupy the same ecosystems with Grizzlies (Glacier NP was where I experienced that). Nice photo.

Definitely a black bear. And if you are referring to the location as Aspen, Colorado, that makes it even easier. There are no grizzly bears in Colorado. Regards, Dean
