Canon Pro100 Prices

I am thinking about replacing my old Epson with the Canon Pro100. Presently the cost is about $350 after the mail-in rebate. I was wondering if the price has been lower within the past year as I seem to remember there were various bundles that included the Pro100 that resulted in a lower cost than $350. If so, any thoughts about when such a future bundle and lower cost might happen?

Assuming you want a new one that comes with a manufacturer warranty yes they come on sale once in a while. Just keep watching for them at your usual haunts.

Many times they go for around $100 after rebate, sometimes as low as $49. This was the cost with the included free paper bundle, free shipping.

I see that BHphoto now charges an additional $50 for the FREE paper over the cost of the printer alone price. Thus no gain there.

Adorama seems to not sell the printer anymore.

Things have surely changed.

It will be a long time before you see the rebates that resulted in the printer costing less than a set of ink. That is why I bought one.

I was tempted to buy another when I used up the ink.

I *did* buy 2 of them @ $50 each from the heck of a rebate days.

The second is sitting in the box in a spare room.

If you are price sensitive waiting for a better price/rebate offer is worth doing. I think the days of being able to buy the Pro-100 for $49 are long past but $79 and $99 offers still pop up from time to time. I have two new in box I bought a few years ago since they were less than the price of the ink. Since many people did that buying a new one on Craigslist for 100-150 is quite possible. Just make sure it hasn't been stripped of its ink and printer heads.

Also, price discounts on the Pro-10 are rarer but they do happen. Just a week or two ago Hunts had it for $179 after rebates including shipping which was a very good price. And Murphy's Camera has had it as low as $149 but without shipping a couple of years ago. Those large regional stores tend to only advertise locally but the sales often get mentioned here.

I just saw that Hunt's price for the Pro-100 is $169. That is a fair price but still not as low as you might find if you wait a few months.

The also have the Pro-1000 for $999 with a ton of free paper. The Pro-1000 never is deeply discounted so that is also quite a good deal. And if you are serious about printing the Pro-1000 is a MUCH better printer than either the Pro-10 or Pro-100 not that there is anything wrong with those printers.

In the U.S., Pro-100 prices have been rising for about six months, we don't know why, and we don't know whether much less when they will fall again.

For a few years the Pro-100 had generally been $130 net of rebate, and there were occasional specials that went as low as $60 net of rebate. About six months ago the price went up to about $150 net of rebate, and the Pro-100 was out of stock more often than it had been. Then a couple of months ago the price went up to $210 net of rebate. Now Adorama does not list the Pro-100 at all, and B&H has it for $349 net of rebate. Why?

* Maybe the Pro-100 is being discontinued and is about to be replaced with a new model, and the price has gone up because only a few remain in stock and there's still strong demand.

* Maybe Canon is having CoVid-19-related production and/or distribution problems with the Pro-100. High demand plus low supply equals increased prices.

* Maybe Canon has decided that the Pro-100 has become the clear printer to have in this market segment, that it has crushed its nearest competitor, the Epson XP-15000, which is also $349, and therefore that there's no reason to essentially give the printers away for the price of the ink that comes with them (or less).

* Maybe Canon has decided that it alienates customers in other parts of the world by selling the Pro-100 in the U.S. so much cheaper than anywhere else.

Those are just my best guesses. I don't think any of us really knows.

I still have several 50 sheet packages of Canon 13x19 inch paper that came as free bonus when purchasing ink cartridges. They were obviously cognizant of fact that it would require a couple sets of ink refills to use it all.

The best prices for the PRO-100 are generally available during photo trade shows, Black Friday, and the holidays. B&H has the OPTIC show coming in early June so that may be a good time to check for special pricing.

The Canon rebate is good till the end of June, so that will still be there regardless. I also noticed that the B&H web site has the PRO-100 with "Free" photo paper for $49 more than the printer alone. I brought that to their attention in an on-line chat a few days ago, but it seems they've come up with a new definition for the word "free."

Thanks everyone for the feedback. I guess I will wait a bit to see if the tradeshows reduce the price or even wait for the Black Friday specials. In the meanwhile I will try to get my old Epson 1800 unclogged and running again.

I think it's probably some of all of what you mentioned. What better hobby to pick up during coronavirus? But we have to be at the end of the product cycle for the Pro-100. I don't know what could be next for Canon. I'd only buy another printer if they offered a way to bring ink costs down. Offer larger cartridges would be my only thing to ask them. Otherwise, my Pro-100 has worked flawlessly for 6 years.

I bought mine sometime last summer when Canon was doing the rebate and sale promotion.

We paid $349 at the local camera shop and the sale came with a pack of Canon LU-101 Pro Luster 13x19.

The dealer filled out the rebate paperwork and photocopied the receipt on the spot. All we had to do was to cut out the UPC sticker from the box, and send in the paperwork to Canon for the rebate. We received the prepaid visa card back in just over a month.

The dealer also had discounted the printer so I do believe our out of pocket, in the end, was $49 plus tax.

For those who are seeing this as what B&H or Murphy's Camera or Hunt's or any other retailer might do with prices and specials, take note that Canon itself appears to be offering a substantially lower rebate than it used to. Here's what B&H showed as of just now:

What used to be a $200 Canon rebate on the printer alone or a $250 Canon rebate on the printer plus 50 sheets of 13x19 inch photo paper has turned into a pair of $150 rebates.

So the price change is not only that B&H has increased the base price from $380 to $499, but that Canon has reduced the rebates too.

(And then consider that Adorama no longer even lists either the Pro-100 or the Pro-10, and I'm leaning to thinking a pair of new printers will be announced soon.)

Hunts is an old and respected Boston/New England photo house, one step down in size to B&H/Adorama. Have purchased many times over the years and they are great to deal with.

Anyone price-sensitive and wanting a Pro-100 now probably ought to jump on that deal. B&H and Adorama haven't been cheaper than since January or February, and Adorama no longer even lists the Pro-100 (or Pro-10). If a Pro-100 replacement is announced, it's almost sure to cost two or three times that amount, at least for the first year or two.

HOWEVER, I think Hunt's is wrong about the amount of the rebate, apparently it's $150 not $200, so the net cost is $220, not $170. I base that on the rebate form on Canon's own website (https://shop.usa.canon.com/estore/m...PRO10-and-PRO100_0518_0630_Final_Approved.pdf), which says it's for "purchases made from May 18, 2020 through June 30, 2020." Also, B&H says the Canon rebate is $150.

Take a look at the rebate form itself. Each vendor makes a separate deal with Canon. It wouldn't really matter to me if I was in the market right now. Its a great deal no matter what and not found elsewhere. I have both the PRO-10 and PRO-100 and really enjoy printing with them.

Good luck

Steve

Sorry, I may be slow, but does the form I linked to indicate that a Pro-100 rebate could be anything other than $150 over the specified time period, regardless of retailer? Maybe it does, and I'm missing it. Thanks.

I basically agree with you--even at the current net-of-rebate prices, both the Pro-100 and Pro-10 are excellent printers for the money.

On the other hand, if having the latest and greatest appeals to you even though it will probably cost substantially more and you may have to wait a few months, see the thread "Major Canon announcements in July?" (https://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/63977862).
