After my E-M1 Mark I and a number of lenses were stolen, I am thinking of adding a TCON-17X to my Stylus 1 in the interim while I am trying to decide on a replacement M4/3 camera. I would use the camera for travel, hiking, and just casual photography.

Have you found the quality of the converter lens and resulting images useful for my above use cases, or did you find you needed/wanted the wide angle converter more? Any issues anyone have while buying this or the required adapter used?

Thanks, Myck

I highly recommend the 1.7x, it maintains f2.8 to 510mm optical, and Oly's 2X is quite usable, so that gives 511 to 1,020 still f2.8.

Camera in one jacket pocket; tele in other jacket pocket, the most portable f2.8 510mm you can find.

I have several cases: brown one fits my Stylus 1. Black shoulder bag fits Stylus 1 with tele on, and my rx100 in a slim case alongside the lens barrel, that case is only 9" long!

I bought a spare Stylus 1, it came with the wide converter, I haven't bothered to use it, my Sony rx100m3 is 24mm, wide enough, and it's 1" sensor, f1.8 at 24mm; the longer reach rx100m6 is f2.8 at 24mm, so it is still best for wide.

Just messing around, the case can fit the Stylus 1 with both tele and wide lenses.

I had a few chances to buy a Stylus 1 plus TCON 17x and wide. I passed. I wonder how it would compare to the FZ200/FZ300 from Panasonic which would be much less hassle as a one stop shop.

That Pany model has 1/2.3" sensor.

I think 1/1.7" size sensor is a threshold size, a base size for me. Certainly 1/2.3" sensors can produce darn good images, and they allow makers versatile models, often great reach.

I have no experience nor remember seeing images from a constant f2.8 1/2.3", those images will have lower ISO than typical zoom lenses that progressively darken, that will be a step up.

To my eye, at my typical viewing size on 27" monitor, Stylus 1 produces higher IQ photos than 1/2.3" sensors. (Not pixel peeping).

This contrasts with the fact that in good light, 1/1.7" can compete with my 1" sensor, AND, at my viewing size, it is very often not possible to see an advantage of my full size sensor over my 1" sensor. That's what I mean when I say threshold. Of course FF gives shallow focus advantage readily seen even at icon size.

Stylus 1 is unique in the pairing of 1/1.7" sensor with it's constant f2.8 zoom lens. The highly acclaimed XZ-1 has a terrific lens, combined with 1/1.63" sensor size.

Constant f2.8, lots of zoom, is terrific for kids sports. I find Stylus 1 base 300mm reach enough for all my grand-kids chosen sports, IOW, I tried but don't need extra reach of tel 1.7x for soccer, even shots from the other end of the field.

I use 1.7x for birds, nyc architectural details, ... not so often, but terrific when needed. The advantage of a smaller base camera for most of my needs, and the ability for more bright reach when desired is one of the things I like best about the Stylus 1.

My rx100m6 stops at 200mm, and it is down to f4.5 long before that, it is not enough for kids soccer, even in good light, Stylus 1 200-300 extra is a wonderful thing. That range lets me get closer, avoiding too much cropping in post which 12mp or 10mp limit.
