Was curious to hear your thoughts on this. What are your favourite photography channels/names on YouTube, and why?

He does a great job on wildlife photography and also how to set up your camera if you're a Nikon shooter. His e-book on wildlife photography is well worth the money IMO.

Yeah, and he's not paid by Nikon either so tells it like it is, warts 'n all.

Also Nigel Danson is pretty level headed, gear agnostic and seems to give some good advice
Are you absolutely sure Perry isn't compensated in some way by Nikon? No free gear or early access?
I can promise you the money stream between Nikon and I is one way - my wallet to their bank account :) I have never received any gear from Nikon, nor have I received any early access or free rentals (which I can get with NPS). Nothing, never, ever. Nikon has never once even reached out to contact me (and I have been referred to them by several people who know some of the "higher ups" in the US).

The good thing though is that I have zero guilt when I'm out shooting my Sony stuff :D

Good to hear Steve, thanks for clarifying.

Ted Forbes: Gives coherent and solid reasons for his opinions with a solid understanding of photography

Gordon Laing: Clear, precise and covers the bases

Kai Wong: Funny and surprisingly insightful

I'll second the rec for Steve Perry. His videos are great, and I've purchased pretty much all his ebooks, which are well worth the modest price he asks. He's a wildlife photog, so since that is my main interest I've really learned a lot of valuable things from him. I also appreciate his gear reviews, which are very frank and honest. I really like that he's not connected with Nikon, although he makes it clear he does like Nikon gear in general.

Hands down, Matt Granger. I like Dustin Abbot, but he doesn't have near the personality of Matt. Christopher Frost is pretty good as well.

I watch a ton of great content, including that by:
  • Kai Wong (excellent, humorous content)
  • Tony & Chelsea Northrup (love how they cracked the whip on the Nikon Z's and busted that Canon-is-best color science mythos)
  • Jared Polin
  • Matt Granger
  • Dan Watson
  • Mads Iversen
  • Thomas Heaton
  • some others
Who I don't (and never would) watch:
  • Any brand ambassadors (they simply cannot be trusted, as they have shown time and time again)
  • People whose editorial oversight makes them pussy-foot around or gloss over very real issues with the item under review
P.S. A big thank you to Smaug for cleaning up those nasty never-youtuber rants

When it comes to reviews that elaborate extensively on particular models' functionality, I've become a big fan of Maarten Heilbron. His videos are particularly hands on and for people looking to jump brands or get comprehensive tutorials for diving into settings and the menus.

Sample of Maarten's stuff:

If you're looking for some levity and be entertained, there isn't anybody on YouTube quite as quirky as Camera Conspiracies. He's a bit video centric and might be an acquired taste until you get used to his schtick, but sometimes he's hilarious.

As gearheads we should all be able to relate to this particular hilarious skit/song, All I Want is the Perfect Camera

Or familiar with with either, thanks for recommending them 🤗
