Took these pictures today and I can' t decide what type of Hawk it is. Picture taken in NW Connecticut.

I'm pretty sure it's a Cooper's Hawk because I do see Red-tailed pretty often and this one seemed smaller (a bit bigger than a crow) and its call wasn't as much of a shriek as I'm used to with a Red-tailed, it was a bit more muted.

Wadaya think?

Looks like a Red-shouldered Hawk to me.

I think you are correct, I think it is a Red-shouldered upon further review.

Thanks!

Yes, a Red-shouldered. They are the most accipiter-like of the North American buteos in terms of their profile and flight behavior so I can see why you thought it might be a Coopers.

Where I live on the South Carolina Coast we have a pair of them that hang out around our community. They’re beautiful birds.

Yes, that is definitely a Red-shouldered Hawk just take a look at shoulder area when it is flying you can definitely tell it is Red-shouldered Hawk.

Here's a good imagine of a Red-tailed hawk with its tailed facing the camera
