Thank you for your nice comments Sabrina! Glad you liked it. Totally missed the direction of light from the second lamp - thanks for correcting it! I waited for more than an hour for the lamps to light up but gave up...it looks somewhat boring without themReally nice! I think the added (or enhanced?) lights in the foreground add a lot to this image.
One technical nit about those lights (and I mean this to be entirely constructive, because I am a geek who enjoys figuring out how to do lights as you did): Light from the middle lamp would be striking the brick approx. in the circled location rather than way back in that corner. (Draw a line from the base of the lamp post to the wall, and you can see where it aligns with the wall.)

Thank you stevie!Beautiful.
Thanks for your nice comments Bill! Agreed, it is a nice spot.Top notch jm10, love it. Excellent spot for the period looking shot, I dare say you went looking for a viewpoint like this and it payed off dividends. Well done
Bill.
You are quite right Sabrina - here is another version done later on a different day I believe. The lights on the top are real

I have not "lit up" the lamps, but I may give it a try...(note that the woman in the window still sits in the same place...)

I did noticed this...looks a little disrespectful, but this is what 13 sec SS does on a windy day. You think I should plant a nice one to show my respect?were you trying to remove the union jack on this oneYou are quite right Sabrina - here is another version done later on a different day I believe. Thanks for your nice comments Lars!A fantastic shot and good job on the lights. You're right about them adding a lot to the image.
Thank you kindly Trevor!Great shot and interesting discussion about lighting it up
Thank you for your kind remarks! Yes, it is popular indeed, I did not find it by accident. Although it was deserted on both days I was there...It is a great city with plenty of photo opportunities - it was difficult to leave, so much history...I missed the old wall...perhaps another reason for a next visit? It's a very popular spot and I've seen the same view in photographs taken over many decades, including some really nice b&w shots. I suspect the pavement may be well-worn by the feet of tripods and photographers! I went to school right behind where you were standing and passed by here almost every day but I never got round to photographing it.
That said, you've done an excellent job, very sympathetic and with very nice color grading.
By the way. did you look at and photograph the old wall behind there? It's the only remaining part of the original Edinburgh city wall.
Thanks for your comments RedFox! I am interested in your comment regarding the lack of contrast. There was no conscious effort to give it an HDR look; usually try to avoid it. I suppose one way to make it look more contrasty would be to present it in BW, but I did not want to do this. I actually like the steps and the lamps leading down the street; the rock upon which the castle sits does not look that attractive to me to serve as a background. Too busy - perhaps...Too much of an hdr attempt resulting in lack of depth because it lacks contrast. The stuff in the foreground is in the way honestly. Too busy a photo.
