I shoot dance schools and currently full steam ahead till Christmas. My daughter dances (11 years ) and i just received the pro video taken from there concert night. It was terrible. A comment was made yesterday by one of the dancers mum while at my studio and i have to totally agree, that you could have taken a better video with a phone of the concert than the pro video guy produced. Phones arnt killing the industry the photographers/videographers are by producing work not up to the standard of a phone ;-) Ive been hearing it all week from parents from other schools as well.

Some 20 yrs ago I was prevented from filming my Daughter's dance recital this forced to buy "pro footage" of a hired "pro". Editing aside, as there was none, it was un-watchable. I looked at it once, not even watched. It was an instructional on how NOT to do it.

Its totaly deceptive by the vid guys. Im lucky enough to shoot the stills for the schools so i get access to shooting my daughter at fhd and 4k on a second camera this year for my keepsake. I pulled a vid out from 10 years ago shot on my then canon g9 compact and it still blows the pro vids away for detail to this day.

When will you ever understand that the problem was because of a lousy Videoman and not lousy gear. A lousy Videoman will also produce lousy videos with a smartphone so the gear used is completely irrelevant here.

Im a lousy video guy but my vids are on another level ( higher :-) ) a pipeline restriction is the recording to dvd. and viewing on your typical 1920x1080 tv or monitor.
