Sigma MC-21 firmware update

https://www.sigmaphoto.com/article/sigma-mount-converter-mc-21-firmware-update-11-21-2019/

Always thought firmware updates would be possible through the body. Have not loaded it yet,, probably not until tomorrow.
does a lens have to be mounted or just the adapter?

tks mucho for posting this.

closer look reveals a lot wrong with this. many of the links to the mc21 at the link posted don't work. and the download link is to the camera firmware, not the adapter. and the camera firmware has been out for a few weeks now.
closer reading gives the impression that the mc21 update was rolled into the camera v1.01 update all along. but the camera update chglog didn't say anything about the adapter afaik.

anyone know what is going on here? is the actual link to the adapter just missing from the page? and also you have two choices where to apply updates--the camera and the lens. you'd think the mc21 would fall under the lens category, but there's just not enough information to go on here and unless i'm missing something obvious, i'm terminally confused.

aha! you actually have to go to this link,:

It seems that the update applies to the fp body for use with the Sigma adapters. The text is not that clear but it seems that the update was already included in the latest firmware for the S1/S1R. No mention of any support firmware update for the Leica SL/CL or if it was needed.

The L-mount consortium is not quite a shambles yet.

But it seems that this is just part of the Sigma philosophy in restricting firmware updates to camera and lens bodies.

Maybe they don’t want to be caught with the MC-11 experience (EF-E/FE) where perhaps those adapters were mainly bought by EF mount lens owners in general and used with Sony bodies? Of course they simply could not keep up with the lens compatibility advances that a dedicated adapter manufacturer (Metabones) was achieving.

So now with the MC-21 it is much more focused on only working well with Sigma lenses - period.

Consumers will figure it out - they genrally don’t like half hearted attempts.

The SA-L update was definitely not already included in any recent camera firmware updates, as they used my 24-35mm Art lens to "discover" the bug last week. Still kind of miffed that they kept insisting my lens was the issue...

no, that's not it tom. go to the global page at the link i posted and select /downloads/, /accessories/, then the _right_ mc21 adapter. i spent 20 minutes in confusion before i realized i'd downloaded the update for the /sa/ adapter, not the /ef/ one. once i sorted that stupidity on my part out, update went flawlessly. takes about 2-3 minutes.

the sa download is first, followed by the ef version.

I updated my MC-21 (on S1) without issue a few days ago. Just download firmware to card as is usual but be sure there is only the adaptor mounted to the camera before you switch on the run the firmware update.

Thanks Guy. The Sigma words are not masterfully clear.

I now understand that Sigma means to allow the firmware in its MC-21 adapter to be updated but only if you own a Sigma or Panasonic camera body.

Strange that there is no corresponding instructions for Leica bodies - or do Leica buffs just use the same instructions as given for the Panasonic S1/S1R?

Where there is life there is hope. If indeed the restrictions imposed for EF mount lenses on L-Mount bodies <<are>> adapter based then maybe “one day” ....

was it your understanding that you could update the mc21 using either the fp or the s1? using the same file perhaps? i'll have to go to the panasonic support page to see if the adapter is listed there and the file available. if so, nice to have the choice if you own both bodies.

What does it update? The autofocus performance?

I successfully updated the MC-21 (SA-L mount) firmware to 1.1 using a Leica SL2 a couple of weeks ago. The instructions are the same as for the S1. To make sure it worked fine, I had only one card in the SL2 at the time of the update.

Thanks - it is a good addition to the knowledge base. It seems that Sigma only speak about Sigma products. Leica of course cannot really speak about the MC-21 as it is a Sigma product.

Metabones (for example only) are a third party supplier (but don’t make an EF-L adapter). The advantage of being “third party” is that you can give instructions generically for all combinations of product that work with that adapter.

It seems that we can now assume that if “Sigma says” it will work with Sigma gear then there is a good chance that it will work with all L-Mount compatible gear.

Unfortunately, the SA-L MC-21 with the Leica SL2 also disables SL2's IBIS, which to me is a dealbreaker. I hope Sigma creates a new adapter (or somehow updates the MC-21) so IBIS and AF-C are possible with the SL2.

Trying that right now and it just does not update at all. Just says firmware already installed. Tips? Thanks

haha! easy to do as i can attest after wasting 20 minutes. the site is not very helpful in sorting the versions out.

Alright I guess I was wrong lol. I have both versions on the sd card which was formatted in camera with nothing else and it says the samething on the s1r.

So I figured it out. It's super stupid. If I wrote it to the memory card using a reader it just cant find the update file. If i plug the camera into the pc as storage it finds it if I copy it this way. Tried with 3 different memory cards. Also worked fine with lens attached.

I tried your method of plugging the camera into my Mac but it didn't work, then I pulled my card out of my Z6, formatted on the S1, loaded update and, like magic it worked! It wanted to use the XQD slot!
