Copying Z6 settings to Z7

Trying to copy settings from Z6 to Z7. I am able to save the settings to the XQD card on the Z6. I then insert the card into the Z7 and expect to be able to load the settings, however the "load" option is greyed out, and message states "cannot use this option in camera's current state" (or words to that effect).

Both cameras have same firmware versions (2.01)

Anyone else had this, or know how to resolve?

Don't know if this will help

Settings saved using the camera or other cameras of the same model can be restored by selecting Load settings. Note that Save/load settings is only available when a memory card is inserted in the camera, and that the Load settings option is only available if the card contains saved settings.

D Saved Settings
Settings are saved in a file with a name beginning with “NCSET” and ending with three characters that differ from camera to camera. The camera will not be able to load settings if the file name is changed.

So I don't know if you have to change the filename of the file to match the camera you are trying to copy it to.

I don't have either camera, but try this if you have a suitable card reader. Copy the settings file from the card to your computer. Then format the card in the Z7. Copy the settings file from the computer to the card that you formatted in the Z7. Then attempt to install on the Z7. If that doesn't work, then it might not be possible to copy Z6 settings to Z7.

I think the saved file is the same name but I will check, thanks.

Good suggestion, I'll give it a go later. I do know you can simply insert the card if doing this on Nikon DSLR's, so expected it to work on the Z series, however it's not, so def worth trying. Thank you.

z7 creates a .bin file with 001, z6 creates a file with 002.

As noted on another reply, when saving the settings a .bin file is created. On the z7 this is called NCSET001.BIN, on the z6 it is NCSET002.BIN.

I renamed the file from the z6 to the z7 file name as you suggested, copied to the z7 card. Tried to load settings - "This option is not available at current settings, or in the camera's current state".

If I save the z7 settings I can re-load them, so def appears to be an issue with copying settings from one camera to other.

What a PITA.

This is from Thom Hogan's ebook on the Z6/Z7:
  • You can’t move settings between camera types. Heck, you can’t even move settings between a D810 and D810a, even though there really are no menu differences between those cameras. You also can’t move settings between a D600 and D610, or a D7100 and D7200. And no, you can’t move settings between a Z6 and Z7, either. Silly Nikon.

Each model has its own unique abilities therefore unique features, therefore unique firmware and unique setup configuration options.

And you can't move settings when firmware version is different. The settings only transfer if it is the same camera with same firmware version.

Apparently this is because the settings appear to be binary dump of camera memory. If it was in an intelligent format like xml, it would have been possible to translate.

That said maybe someone can try a hextool to modify the binary data to make it look like it came from another camera.
