Ive been talking about this combo as a small and light setup in addition to FX lenses, and as it happens I’m visiting Tokyo and got to play around with this combo in the Nikon store in the Ginza shopping area. Attaching photos. (I put larger versions of these in my gallery, couldn’t figure out how to put them here.)

Love this setup and see it as a really appealing way to complement an FX kit. Although I have to say, the Z50 itself is also quite nice and I can see owning one of those as well.

BTW, the Nikon store was a joy to visit. They let you pick up and mess around with everything there. So fun.

So what would be the focal length on the Z6/7 ?

It switches the camera to DX mode, and then gives you the equivalent to 24-75mm. The nice thing is DX mode still fills the viewfinder, unlike with the optical VFs where you get the small box within the larger view.

Ok thanks - and produces images similar to DX quality ?

Yep! Especially with the Z7 and it’s high megapixel sensor. Putting the 16-50 on switches it to DX mode, so you basically have an FX and a DX camera in one. Pretty versatile.

I imagine I would mostly use FX lenses, but I am excited about the option to go small

I like it!

Need to get one myself for casual use when I don’t want to carry the 24-70 2.8!

I've thought about going that route but may end up waiting for the compact prime 28 and 40 that were in the lens roadmap. For now my compact rig is a Voightlander 40 on the FTZ which isn't too bad.

I just got.this new nikon lens ... it is truly sharp and tiny.

I am hoping for something similar in IQ to the 18-55 AF-P (which I really thought was exceptional for what it was).

I too have a Voigt 40 with adapter as a compact rig - the advantage of which is that I get to use the full frame along with a couple stop advantage. The disadvantage is that I'm kind of stuck at 40mm FL :-)

I'm pretty excited about those compacts. I just wish there was more information about when they'd be coming out.

In the meantime, I'll just get the kit with the 24-70 and add the 50. Then I'm debating getting the Techart adapter for Sony lenses and picking up the Sony Zeiss 35mm f/2.8, which I could always sell if the Nikon compacts look good.

OMG, that's awesome! Can't wait for the Z 40mm pancake.

Pricing looks good too!

Can it shoot in FF mode on certain focal length?

Doubtful as DX mode is locked with DX lenses on the Z FF models.

Discussed last month - urgent FW update is required (also the fix to combine IBIS and VR)
IF Nikon upgrade the FW, the 16-50 will hopefully be usable at 1:1 ie 24x24mm frame on a FX Z MILC

also see this thread wrt 16-50 DX on Z7, which I'm also planning on....

Do you check if the DX 16-50 mm give extra stabilisation (VR) to the Nikon Z6/Z7 combining in camera and lens stabilisation? Thanks

I didn't check for that specifically. I wondered whether VR would be disabled automatically when attached to a camera with IBIS, but someone (somewhere) said you need to disable it through menus.

I took my Z7 into the store today and tried the Z 16-50mm and the Z 50-250mm DX. I couldn't get the lens VR to work at all with either lens on the Z7, nor could I get the IBIS to work on the Z7. In fact, the menu item was greyed out and there was a response something like "Connect a compatible lens to the camera"--I can't recall the exact response, The VR on both lenses worked fine on the Z50. I also tried it with the store's Z7 and obtained the same result. Then I stuck an AF-P 10-20mm DX on the Z7 and the VR worked fine and the menu item on the Z7 was functional again. So, it looks like (1) the Z7 needs a firmware update to be compatible; or (2) the lenses need a firmware update to be compatible; or (3) Nikon did not discover this bug in the testing process; or (4) they have no plans for compatibility between the Z7 and the two lenses; or (5) there's another explanation (and possible fix) that I have not considered. I certainly hope it's not #4!

Has anyone discovered the same thing?
