I'm thinking of replacing my S45 with the much smaller S400. However, I find MF extremely useful to compensate for the S45's inability to focus in dimmer light or larger group pics in low-light. Setting MF to > 10 feet saved the day. I have not read anything about the S400 having a manual focus capability. Can someone please confirm this...

True, the S400 doesn't have manual focus. But, it has a new kind of AF illuminator which apparently is much brighter (no redeye!) and that should make for better focusing, too.

I read about that too. However, one of my acid test is to take a pic of a large room with minimal lighting. I should think that a well-designed focus system will default to infinity if it can't focus since the ability to focus is largely limited to the range of the focus assist lamp. The S45 defaults to something else other than infinity. I then set the MF to a rough estimated distance and the pic is clear. Without MF, the question is whether the s400's focus assist light can reach > 10' or match the 717's powerful hologram assist lamp.

I wouldn't worry about manual focus. I had an E10 for 2 years and almost always used the auto focus. Hey Dan. I sharpened most of the S400 images off the website that Ngo posted. Your right they look great. I will probally go ahead and buy the S400 but I just want to make sure there are no bugs with the new lens.
