When I am outside in the yard doing chores when I look up and see a big beautiful red tailed hawk overhead flying low. Just circling above me. No camera in hand! I run inside, grab my A9, attach 200-400mm, 1.4TC and go running back outside. It’s gone of course. Such a rarity around here too! That is what grinds my gears. Oh well maybe next time.

Take heart. The sight of a red tail hawk in majestic full flight, touched by the sun, is a beautiful thing that always remains in your mind's eye. You don't need a camera or computer screen to remember and enjoy it over and over again.

But yeah, capturing it would have been good for those gears. :-)

I also had an encounter with a Red Tail Hawk about 2 weeks ago. But I did have my camera with me a A7II with a Tamron 150-600 lens. This set up is OK for birds sitting still but not so great for BIF. He is circling about 100 ft up and I manage to get a couple of so so shots. But next thing you know he is 20ft off the ground about 100ft away and he is flying right at me and he is not a happy camper. He was squawking the whole way. I try & try to get focus but there is no way my camera just can't do it. He finally pulls up about 20ft from me (thank goodness). So a great opportunity to get some good shots and I just couldn't get them. That will grind my gears too.

Here is the only shot I got, almost pointing right into the sun. Oh Well!

Nice shot. Which adapter are you using?

Thanks, It is a Sony LA-EA3. The raw file was like silhouette, (thank goodness for dynamic range) & 100% crop.....Chris

Oh the red tail hawk didn’t miss seeing him run away.... and thought that he was magnificent with power.

Too bad you missed your shot. They really are beautiful and pretty plentiful around here. I usually see them everyday in the trees or flying around the backyard. I have an acre lot and back up to hundreds of acres of farm and more woods. Was just out with the dog for her last walk of the night and the coyotes were in full voice. Kind of an eerie chorus.
