Hi Everyone,

I have a refurbished Canon 70D that I bought 4 years ago and it’s developed a problem.

The ON/OFF thumb switch that’s a part of the mode selection dial is sticking. Sometimes it was working perfectly, sometimes it was really stiff, sometimes I had to hold it all the way over with my thumb to keep it on. This weekend I think it finally gave up the ghost and it’s not turning on again. I dropped it off with Canon Customer Service in Long Island, NY and they sent it to their Virginia repair center.

The quote I got back was $359 to repair it. With shipping and tax I’m $419 which is about the same price as a used 70D body, and if I spend about $200 I could upgrade to used 80D body. So you can see where I’m going here. It’s kinda like the car with a bad transmission at this point. You know it still has some value but not in its current state.

So I’ve got a couple of questions here.

Besides Canon Factory Service are there any other reputable repair services you would recommend that might be less expensive?

If I can get this down to like $200 - $300 I can see enough merit in fixing this body.

Anyone have any opinions on Phototech or Camera Doctor in New York City? I could bring the camera in to either of those since I live on LI.

Finally, if I opt to buy a different body can I really expect any value out of trying to trade in or sell the 70D body? Or am I going to get offered couch change and a bag of chips?

have you checked your local camera shop to see they can work on canon cameras and how much they charge to fix your issue? i'd personally talk to them and take it from there ;-)

Try contacting Midwest Camera Repair in Michigan. They do good work, but I have no idea how their cost compares to Canon's

Canon is not always the more expensive option. I had a 7d ii that had a broken door to the flash card. I took it into my local camera repair in Ballard, a good and reputable place, and they said they could not do it for less than $570. So, I bought a new 7d ii. Shortly after, I became a CPS member and subsequently decided to send in the camera for an estimate. They repaired it for $70!
