I would like to shoot some night sky with my new D7200 and 18-105mm kit lens.

Obviously, the 18-105mm is not ideal, due to its f3.5 at 18mm, however it has to do for the moment.

Photopills recommends a 12.8 seconds shutter based on my camera and my lens @18mm f3.5.

I also heard that it's best to first set the camera at AF-S single point. Target one of the stars, half press the shutter and then switch to manual focus, before taking photos.

Is the above indeed optimal? What in camera settings would be recommendable (in terms of ISO, NR ON or OFF etc.)?

Please note, I shoot raw only.

Thanks a million!

Hi. I am surprised at the photopill app's guide exposure. Personally I get some trailing at 10 seconds with a 16mm Samyang f/2.

I would suggest you try 10 seconds, ISO1600 and f/3.5 on your lens at 18mm for a starter and adjust ISO & shutter after that.

There are lots of thoughts on focusing but I personally have found that using live view, maximum magnification on manual focus works best for me.

Obviously dark skies, stable platform & no vibration are also essential so I use either timed or cable release.

I would also recommend putting your query on the Astro forum.
