I am normally a DLSR shooter but thinking about purchasing a super zoom bridge, namely either the P900 or P1000

my first instinct is to go with the 1000 as I understand it allows you to shoot in RAW and has the longest zoom

i am wanting one if the two so that I can always have a camera with me say even to and from the office when I normally wouldn’t have my other camera with me.

I guess what I am wondering is how large of a print can I make with the P900 as I do like to crop and make enlargements to frame and hang.

Thank you so much

Get a larger sensor superzoom camera of at least a 1" size sensor like the Sony RX10 IV if you want to make large prints from a cropped image. The P900 and P1000 have a 1/2.3" sensor.

..my recommendation..

..is for you to try the P900 camera..

..the P900 with it's 2000mm (equiv.) zoom, already is quite enough for most, and there's no other competition (except the P1000)..

..also the P900 camera's size & weight is much more manageable by most (as the size & weight of the P1000 is something most complained about)..

..another camera for you to consider (if you don't need the 2000mm (equiv.) zoom), is the Nikon B700 camera..

..the B700 camera is smaller & more compact than the P900, and have a 20mp sensor.. but the B700 is more diffucult to find these days, because it is a discontinued model.. however, if you browse on ebay, you may find some (around the $400 range)..

..as to be able to print them larger sized, even a 6mp camera is able to print larger sized, it all boils down to the know-how.. example, to get the best quality prints, best to use 300dpi, however can still use 160dpi for larger sized prints with "decent" qualities..

..to be honest, I'm not an expert in printing, just some of the basics for me.. printing a picture image is the ultimate destination.. and there's an "art" in able to do a good print job..

..thanks for sharing & happy snapping..

..Cheers, John.l

Wondering why you would even consider cropping an image at all when you have 2000 to 3000mm to work with? Don't crop...ZOOM! 👍

If one shoots wildlife, as I do, Kurt, one will encounter many situations where even the 3,000mm of the P1000 won't be enough zoom.

Despite the P1000 being small for a camera that can shoot at 3,000mm, it's still (in my opinion) too large and heavy to serve as an 'always with you camera'. That said, I highly recommend you visit a camera store that carries them and determine that for yourself. I carry my P1000 on my morning walks because that's when I see the most wildlife, but it's an effort and isn't the camera I normally take just to have a camera with me.

Thank you so much. I appreciate all of your help. I should have mentioned that I like to shoot nature, wildlife..especially birds. This will be my secondary camera to have something always with me.

I appreciate that. Definitely something to consider. I will definitely do that. Was hoping to find something used

..I'm glad to help.. :-)

..there are many here (including me), who enjoys shooting nature, wildlife & birds..

..so what/which camera is your current "primary" camera(?)..

..in my opinion, bridge cameras makes great "secondary" cameras..

Good morning John.

I started with a bridge camera, the Nikon P90 then moved onto a Nikon DLSR, the D90 which I wore them both out lol

I just recently switched from my Nikon DLSR to the Olympus OMD EM1 MII using the LEICA DG VARIO-ELMAR 100-400mm F4.0-6.3 ASPH. POWER O.I.S. (M4/3)

i am in Love with this system but still getting to know it. Lol. Lots to learn on it.

Personally I don't print anything bigger than 6"x4" from the P1000, making postcards for my wife. I think A4 would be the limit for me.

A friend who's a professional photographer had a play with my P1000 and made an interesting comment. He said, "It's a video camera that takes stills," explaining that he thought using a camera with a shorter zoom range but a bigger sensor (someone mentioned the - very expensive - Sony RX10) and cropping would give better stills images.

If you have a friendly photography shop nearby they might be willing to allow you to take a shot or two from several cameras on your own SD card so you can take them home, print them off and compare the results.

Let us know how you go.

Hi Lorena C,

To print at 300 DPI both the P900 and P1000 can produce prints at 39.0 x 29.3 cm, or 15.36 x 11.52 inches without loss of resolution. There are many online pixel to DPI converters you can use.

In reality, the size and quality of your print will depend on the photo, the printer, the viewing distance and the cost.

I've printed and sold many prints from the P900, P1000, even prints from 4MP cameras etc at 20 x 16 inches and larger.

There is a very good discussion and explanation from Forum Pro Jim Kasson on this subject :

IQ of big prints from 12MP and 24MP sensors

Kind regards,

Paul

Thank yo so much Paul. I greatly appreciate your help

per other’s responses, I was just looking into the Kodak Pixpro AZ901. Since you shoot with the P900 and P1000, what made you decide to purchase yours?

having a hard time deciding
