Hi all,

I have a Nikon AF-S FX NIKKOR F/4D IF-ED 300mm, and I take a lot of pictures of birds. My lens has lately been getting kind of stuck in an f6 stop, even if I have it on f5.6... as I try to focus on a bird, it will automatically lock into f6, and then the picture comes up black. To get it out of being stuck, I have to move around my focus manually and eventually it will become unstuck.

Any thoughts? Do I have to send it in to be fixed?

Thanks, Kim

The obvious first question is whether you have similar problems with other lenses. If no, then clean the contacts mostly on the lens, and secondarily on the camera body. I would also look closely at both sets of contacts to see if there is any damage.

If the above fails to cure the issue, retreat to the Nikon 2 button reset to see if this resolves things.

Next test is to mount lens on another body (your second body or that of a colleague. If it works there then issue is presumably with your body.

Don't ship to Nikon for repair until you isolate the problem to either the camera or the lens.

+1 for johnchap2's ideas - all of them.

The biggest idea is trying your lens on another camera to see if the problem only happens with your camera or if the problem follows the lens to the other camera.

Hope you have a colleague with a suitable camera you can try this with.
