I want to try IR photography. Not ready to convert a camera just yet nor buy one already converted. Would like to get my feet wet with an IR filter.

Is there an IR filter that you've had good experience with? I would like a fairly good one. Looking for a 67mm filter.

Any suggestions would be great. Thanks.

The unmodded A7RIII is NOT sensitive to IR radiation. A broad band IR filter will most likely leak some deep red light to the image sensor but that is not the real thing.

Cameras must be modified to be able to take advantage of IR filters.

Darn! So would that mean you can take regular photos without the ir filter after the modification? Any idea what this costs?

And is that the case with A7III as well? Thanks.

Whole batch of problems covered endlessly on similar threads even within the past year about this.
  • Sony hot-mirrors (IR block filters) aggressively cut IR [more precisely near-IR wavelengths, not longwave thermal IR that isn't detected by silicon sensors],
because all the Sony cameras have internal parts that use IR light internally for functions such as shutter timing, etc.... They weren't manufactured for daytime IR photography.
  • It is possible, I do have the luxury, having a modified a7s with the sensor placed outside the camera body in a heatsink, (no IBIS, no mechanical shutter available) while being a 'full spectrum mod' which means I can use a IR pass filter for daytime IR, and put a regular IR block filter in the modded camera's drop-in filter holder for normal day photography colors/focus, reduced CA and focus blur caused by IR contamination.......
  • The latest models IBIS system also adds complications to doing the IR photography.
It can be done, but you would have to really increase your knowledge on the issue to do such.

Doing IR photography with a mirrorless is nice. I'd recommend getting an APS-C model without IBIS and less shallow depth of field and modding it yourself if you have the talent.

Lifepixel and Kolari-vision are good vendors.

I did such (DIY mod) with an open-box $250 a5000 camera that I use my full frame lens I use with my a7s with.....

I have no such talent. :) Thinking of getting a used a6000 and sending it in.

Thanks for all the info. I will research more on this before pulling the trigger. Man, and I thought I just needed a filter!
