Has anyone heard anything about jpeg 2000 funtionality for the S2? It would be great if this could somehow be accomodated via a firmware update. This is something I'd be willing to pay for.
Thanks,
Robert

Hi Dioni,
Check out this link:

http://www.leadtools.com/SDK/Raster/Raster-Addon-JPEG2000-Example.htm

Adobe has included jpeg 2000 along witht their RAW plugin.
It will do lossless compression and has minimal artifacts.

Much better than conventional jpeg. I believe it will be very big - probably eventually replacing the conventional jpeg format.

Can you go any further? Any links? I do not know what that JPG 200
is at all.

Thx a lot,
Dioni

My understanding about JPeg 2000 is that it requires a lot of processor power and that's one of the things holding it up. I doubt if it can be included via a firmware upgrade, but like you, I would enjoy having it if it could be! :)

I tried using it, as it came with the Adobe RAW plugin. Its the one that allows photoshop to read Fuji RAW files right out of the camera. I am amazed about how slow it was to process, to save it etc. I gave up as there is no way I could establish a reasonable workflow using JPEG 2000.

At least not until I get a dual 5 GIG Powermac with 10 GIGs of memory. Maybe then :)

Byt the way that plug in is really awesome. I haven't had enough time to play with it, but at least preliminarily it seems to be giving me better sharpness control for RAW files out of my Canon EOS 1Ds, something which I have been struggling to get out of the Canon software.

Thanks for the info guys. It looks like it's a little further off than I was hoping. Dioni - Adobe has some information on the last page of their Camera RAW plugin user manual if you are interested. It can be found at:

And I agree it could be replacing the regular JPGs soon. About performance, both the software and the hardware improves real fast, so that won't be a problem soon. Even with todays hardware, improvements in the software can do a lot. Does anyone remember how long did it take to conver a CD to MP3 with the first converters?

Best,
Dioni
