... they fixed the stupid lack of ability to read / write to external storage devices. For me that renders the iPad useless for photography purposes, especially as a travel backup / edit device.

Well, Apple just announces that iOS 13 will fix that and there will be a 'proper' file management capability.

What with more capable photo editing / management apps becoming available, it looks like I'll be thinking about trying my iPad out again for photography purposes.

About time Apple sorted that.

Tablet editing is brainlet-tier

Apple is pleb-tier

Laptop is patrician-tier
I dunno about that.

Apple users don’t *need* to transfer files to external storage. It is like CEOs, if they carry a briefcase at all, choose small ones, since they only deal in one-page briefs.

Apple dragged its feet for years on this. iOS on their large 12.9" ipads is laughable. Their USB-C implementation is crippled and a joke. What a bunch of morons.

Now, I'll bet they use this OS upgrade to slow down older devices--part of their planned obsolescence strategy--and not hard, given how little RAM they outfit their tablets with.

Why would anyone sit around waiting when most of the others allow external offloading and SD storage expansion.

if it doesn't generate revenue, its not a necessary feature to them.

Hmmm, maybe they'll charge you through iTunes to transfer your own files.

And not to forget, they add mouse support!

While I can see plugging in an external device to view some JPEGs on the fly I would never edit or retouch on an iPad. Way too small. I don't even do that on my laptop.

One image is 170 MB.

Typically my use case is to backup now well in excess of 0.5TB while travelling for 2-3 weeks onto at least 1, often 2 Samsung T5 SSDs. I need USB 3 to make that practical. Plus I need to do a bit of checking and sorting and some small editing to share a few images during the trip. Been using a small MacBook but an iPad Pro which I use for many other purposes would suit me fine for that. Yes, I travel with just a small bag these days for work and leisure. Actually smaller for work as leisure I have the camera bag!

Anything to cut down on load is very useful. Right now sitting in O’Hare departures waiting for a flight home to UK after a couple of days in Chicago and 3 continents in 3 weeks. And My body isnt sure really what day it is. Only ever carry on for these trips. Not very glamorous but I did manage a couple of pics (Sony RX100iii for these trips.)

Misty Chicago.
Misty Chicago.

I think there’s enough Win10 tablets now the iPad is less than ideal unless you just shoot jpeg. Even if the speed is less than ideal, you can have full RAW development tools packed in a small bag now.

Apple really disappointment me. But I was ready to be dissapointed anyway. Tim Cook was great for the investors, and sterile for the world at large. His legacy will be that of an administrator. Steve Jobs, that of a genius rebel to be praised and criticized.

Their goal is to make products that sell. Their current products sell quit well at a price point that gives them a healthy profit margin. I wouldn't call them a "bunch of morons".

Whether or not their products meet your particular needs is not that important. What's important is whether their products appeal to the general public (their target market).

Oh yes, their goal is definitely to make products that sell. That's why their latest iPad Pros are bendable.

The quality of a product is a separate question from whether or not the product sells.

An extremely high quality product that meets the needs of many, may be a commercial failure due to a high price, poor marketing, or inability to deliver in quantity. A junk product with the right pricing and marketing can make a huge profit.

Whether or not you think Apple's products are any good, it is clear that they are a combination of product quality, pricing, and marketing that generates a lot of sales and profits.

According to CIPA, In 2018 consumers bought about 10.9 million interchangeable lens cameras . That number includes DSLR, mirrorless, compact system cameras, and rangefinders with interchangeable lenses.

During fiscal year 2018, Apple sold about 43.5 million iPads. Apple also sold 217 million iPhones during 2018. Apple's iPhone and iPad sales dwarf the entire DSLR and mirrorless industry.

Perhaps Apple's products are junk, but they sure do sell a lot of them. It's hard to justify the label "bunch of morons" for a company that makes such a wildly successful and profitable product.

The limited storage would keep me from considering an iPad at all. By the time you get a model with enough storage to make it somewhat useful, you can get a very good laptop for the same money with loads more storage.

According to Google toilet paper rolls makers sold 84 millions units per day. Also, Hubble telescopes only registered 1 sell, well, almost two with the mirror repair. That doesn’t mean Hubble Telescopes or worst than toilet papers, or that iPads are better than 14 carat diamonds. Actually, it doesn’t mean anything; at all. Of course people buying the rolls aren’t morons, unless for the unlikely case where they intend the rolls to be cameras.

Well, my current iPad has 0.5TB of storage which is adequate and twice that of my lightweight laptop plus with the fixes in 13 I hope to be able to a) expand that with my existing super light Samsung T5 1TB drives and b) also be able to easily offload files when I get home.

Sure, good laptops can be had for less but they are still bulkier and heavier and I have enough of those already!
