I went into my local camera shop today, and they had the 717 on closeout for $898.88. Anyone, hear of a replacement for it?

Updates/replacements for the 5xx and 7xx have been released every Fall. As far as I know there's no reason to think Sony has changed their schedule.

True, but it still seems too soon to be closing out for a product that will arrive in the fall.

some think it's because PMA just ended and there are lots of options out there. At the end of the day, buyers love a good deal.

Two days ago I tried to buy a F717 at Media Markt in Herzogenrath/Aachen (Germany). Without success alas, they didn't have this model at stock anymore and were waiting for a new model to come at the end of this month ...

What model would that be? From all reports Sony won't be announcing an update or replacement for the 717 until October.

One way to view it is:

The 717 is Sony's "old" 5MP camera.

The V1 is Sony's new 5MP camera.

It's possible that they intended to have a 717 replacement for PMA but didn't have it ready in time. Who knows, but it's intriguing.

Looks the likely one to me - dealers uncertain where buyers will jump in the immediate months when the V1 arrives and don't want to get caught out twice - now by the v1 and later in the year by the 909 or whatever

That price is nice but quite honestly, it is not a "closeout" price. They may call it a closeout but I bet it is more of a marketing technique.

"We are selling this camera at a closeout price. Better pick it up at the great price while supplies last..."

The V1 is not a replacement for the F717. Neither is it a replacement to the S-series.

The V-series is entirely new. It fits into a new category for Sony in that it gives high image quality, high pixel count, an excellent Carl Zeiss lens, a full complement of manual features, with the bells and whistles of Hologram AF and Nightshot/NightFraming modes, all in a package at a sub-compact size. Oh, and it will work with a newly developed full-featured external flash.

It's a brand new series meant to augment the existing ones.
I bet it's a typo. And I am also willing to wager that the V1 is
not a replacement for the F717. If anything, the V1 fits into the S
line.

True. It's not a great price, but I know the store pretty well and the $ .88 definitely denotes a closeout price. It was selling for an even grand before the closeout.

What they are selling it for today as opposed to last week isn't really the point. It's that if you shop around, you can find it for much lower.

For example, go to Pricegrabber.com and enter "Sony F717", and you'll find it for ~$802 from a fairly reputable dealer.

Your store was selling the F717 for the same as Sony's list price. :-)
